why do people act like being emotionally moved by art/its characters/the narrative—especially when emphasising sympathy for characters—is akin to treating fiction like it is reality. what is the purpose of art if you completely disregard meaning, emotion, technique, message, or the earnest discussion of it? sure, not all art is supposed to be engaged with this way, but why dismiss it?
