CRITTERS 2 1988・dir. Mick Garris
I love the dialog in Critters 2:
"There's no such thing as those things!"
"I don't believe you. I mean, I do believe you. I mean, I believe what you said a couple years ago."
"Do me a favor and don't do me any favors, okay?"
How to tell they were having a blast writing it.
Critters 2 (1988)
In the late 80's films, Critters 1 and 2 there's a bounty hunter couple that can change appearance depending on the environment they are visiting. Their names are Ug and Lee.. (No kidding).
In the first film Ug chooses a stable and pretty much consistent alter ego for being on Earth
Ug's main identity through the series was basically a legally distinct Mick Jagger rock star type guy and he rarely strayed from it.. he was pretty solid with that identity.
But Lee kept on bouncing around between mimicing various people they see along the way while being on Earth. Apparently, and this is something that's touched upon in the beginning of the sequel.. None of the "selves" Lee would try are right.. and one can't live with the wrong self!
Basically, in Critters lore it seems that most identities that Lee took on gave them DYSPHORIA so they often just settled for existing in their natural blank face form.. The way they describe it comes off to me so much as a Trans metaphor!
In Critters 2 however, Lee seems to come across the best self in the form of a Playboy centerfold model seen in an accidentally discarded Playboy magazine their friend Charlie finds on the side of the road.
Ug looks at her like he's discovering her for the very fist time! And she looks like she's experiencing gender euphoria for the very first time!
When I was a kid most of the people around me just her transformation as an excuse from the film to show nudity because her parts inflate tearing her clothes off.
However, it was rather egg cracking for me and kind of an epiphany moment in my formative years.
It's not perfect however, because it seemed like once Lee became a woman she her death clock started ticking like she's subject to certain horror movie rules that got rid of her plot armor unfortunately and I feel like they did her dirty in that movie.
Today, however I also saw something that I feel solidifies my viewing of her as a trans femme icon in film.
I somehow ended up in a Facebook comment area about her and someone said they think she's just technically a man..
Seeing someone talk about Lee like that well.. I feel for her once again!
I claim her along with video game trans icons like Birdo/Catherine, Poison and Vivian!
