Gosh you can just tell how scared Jack is of the Refuge. He's all grim and quiet in a way that he rarely is.

But he goes back for Crutchy. And you can see the care and concern on his face so clearly.

But after all that, all his facing his fears, Crutchy doesn't want to leave. And he respects Crutchy enough to listen to him, and to accept that he'd rather stay than be carried. He doesn't go "no I know what's best for you. you're being ridiculous and we're carrying you out whether you like it or not." He only goes back for Crutchy. And he leaves empty handed;

hey twin let's yap about Deaf!Crutchie together because you're a genius

OKAY! (First off I'll say, I am deaf and that is what really made me decide that Crutchie is deaf too. I have a hearing aid and am almost completely deaf on my left side and have other disabilites too) Jack tells Crutchie when the morning bell rings ( "Mornin' bell ain't rang yet, go back to sleep!" ) Crutchie doesn't always hear when people approach and that's why he is caught during the strike; he doesn't hear the Delancey brothers. In the refuge he is making a lot of noise as he writes (sings) his letter from the refuge. He doesn't realise when he is being loud. Crutchie struggles with the volume of his voice. He doesn't know sign language (as we know it today) but he and the Newsies have signs that they use. Crutchie is deaf in one ear - perhaps from an accident or an illness. Related to why he uses his crutch too. It's all connected. Jack always stands on Crutchie's hearing side so he can always hear him. A lot of people don't know that Crutchie is deaf (Especially in 1899, when it is very dangerous for him being a disabled kid on the streets) Race knows and sometimes will surprise yell in Crutchie's deaf ear just to see if he can hear (he can't) they laugh about this. In Modern Day Crutchie has a hearing aid and he decorates them with little stickers (omg he's just like me) He has looked into surgery for a cochlea implant but decided against it. Wants to learn sign language.

Santa Fe is the most important song, and always will be.

Santa Fe expresses Jack’s desire to go to New Mexico, we all know that. But how Santa Fe is built up to distinguish the two Jacks very clearly. It will get messy, so bear with me.

In the musical, it happens after Seize the Day, or more specifically, after Crutchie gets arrested. In multiple lines in the song you can hear Jack’s grief about losing this person he considered family, for example “Crutchie's calling me Dumb ----- just too damn slow”. Now this may not seem like much, but it definitely shows how Crutchie’s arrest caused Jack to spiral into this monologue about how the only way he will ever be content is by going to Santa Fe. He lost the one person that was keeping him from leaving, so he fully dove into the dream of Santa Fe. In the musical, Jack is grieving the loss of family, and sees Santa Fe as a way to deal with the grief.

Now let’s look at the movie, in which Santa Fe happens BEFORE the Seize the Day fight. It happens after the dinner with Davey’s family (or David, you choose). Why this matters is what the song is about. In the lyrics, you can hear Jack express his need for family, although he pushes it away- due to him not wanting to accept that he needs a community. This is even referenced in his argument with Davey, where he says he has no one tucking him in at night. In the lyrics, “So you ain't got any family, well who said you needed one. Ain't you glad Nobody's waiting up for you” it shows that how he’s reminiscing on the fact he doesn't have one, and the fact that Santa Fe could be his escape. He even says that when his thoughts begin to stray (his lack of a family bond) he would leave. The movie Santa Fe is Jack grieving the LACK of family, due to him never having one in the first place. 

Now when you compare these two Santa Fe’s, you can see the differences in each Jack. In the movie, he doesn't have anyone relying on him, he’s simply staying there because he has to, because he physically can’t leave. 

However, in the musical, it is implied that he could leave (although I doubt it). But it shows how he is staying because of the community he has built over the years. He doesn't see it at first, and Medda even has to talk some sense into him, but he stays in New York for community.

Where I’m getting at is that the two Santa Fe’s are built very differently, to the point that even though Movie Jack and Musical Jack are the same person, their reasons for their dreams are much different.

But this may be just me over analyzing, like it’s 12 am. I'm talking out of my ass. What do I know?

According to Google, you have to be at least sixteen to have a learner's permit in New York and need to be at least seventeen to get your license, provided you already have a permit. Otherwise, you can get a license at eighteen.
