Top 10 Albums of 2017 #10: Crystal Viper - Queen of the Witches

Welcome to my first ever top 10! We’re starting things off hot with probably the biggest band on the entire list, Poland’s Crystal Viper!

Crystal Viper is a very well established band in the heavy / power metal sub-genre and for good reason. They have been consistently putting down slabs of classic metal goodness for their entire career. The NWOBHM spirit is alive and well and Crystal Viper had a big part in that.

Marta Gabriel is considered by most of her fans to be the queen of metal for really good reason. She is one of the strongest and most gritty vocalists traditional metal and that’s including her male peers. Not to mention that she’s also the band’s rhythm guitarist... and she’s hot.

As for the album itself, Queen of the Witches is probably one of the most organic and old school sounding releases from the band. Everything sounds so raw and stripped down. It’s a very True Metal release. Iron Maiden style leads, Judas Priest’s classic Painkiller aggression, Manowar’s... ballads.

That is probably the one thing that may bring down some people’s opinions on this record. There is one full-blown ballad and 2 power ballads on this record. If you’re keeping track, that’s 3 ballads out of 10 tracks... and you could even argue that the 10th track doesn’t count as it’s a cover track.

All that being said, the ballads have grown on me. As with the rest of the tracks, there is that classic songwriting and great musicianship. I refuse to believe I’m the only metal dude who enjoys a cheesy ballad here and there.

If you’re looking for a traditional metal record with old school sensibilities in almost every regard, this is it. It’s got everything a traditional metal album should have in spades. The only reason this release is lower in the list is due to it being fairly generic. Crystal Viper isn’t looking to fix what isn’t broken!
