Tesla released a new album of covers called Homage. There is a new song called Never Alone that I probably won't listen to again. The classic rock songs they cover are pretty basic. Vocals are really the only thing different. I think I would have liked some deviation to freshen up these songs.
Speed/Thrash metal band Intruder only have 3 studio albums. The second album from them is A Higher Form Of Killing and has that thrashy sound from the late 80's. It would have been cool to see what else these guys could have done if they could have survived the 90's.
Merciless Death has a very classic thrash metal sound. Their sophomore album Realm Of Terror is on point. No frills and plain fast!
Détente released their debut album in 1986 and split soon thereafter. Their sophomore effort came out in 2010 and their original lead singer had passed away. The album Decline featured Tiina Teal as the new singer and I think her screeching and singing is awesome. This is a pretty fun thrash record.
DevilDriver released Strike And Kill today and it rips! So damn heavy and i would expect nothing less. Love the tracks Dead In The Water, Sanctified In Scars, Strike And Kill, & Headed For The Fall. Give this one a listen for sure!
Thrash metal band Exmortus released their sophomore album in 2011. It almost feels like saying thrash does not fully describe them as the also have some death elements throughout. Beyond The Fall Of Time feels like a concept album if not Egyptian themed. Pretty cool.
Murder In Mind is the second album from Desecration. It feels like a stripped down death/grind/gore metal album. It is straight and to the point with no frills. I think this is how this genre should be.
Rocka Rollas sophomore effort is Metal Strikes Again. I gotta say that this is fantastic speed metal. Definitely worth the listen, they also released a definitive version of this album 7 years later. That version has 4 more tracks and a different song order.
Saber Tiger is a fun band from Japan. Their second record is AGITATION and is a great listen. Very sound band in the power/progressive metal landscape.
Atrophy have 3 studio albums and the second one is titled Violent By Nature. This is a really good solid thrash album. Guitars are fantastic!
Two albums and a cloud of dust for thrash band Sacrilege B.C. with Too Cool To Pray being the last. This is a very solid thrash album and has that production and sound quality of the late 80's. I wonder what they might have been able to do had they not split up.
If you ever need some Iron Maiden without listening to Iron Maiden, I think Katana will met those expectations. Their sophomore album is Storms Of War and has a fair amount of galloping and storytelling. This nwothm band will most definitely take you back to the 80's.
Traveler broke up at the beginning of last year and have 3 studio albums. Termination Shock is their sophomore effort and is giving those Iron Maiden vibes. Another band in the NWOTHM family and I think represents this genre very well. Very talented musicians.
One of my favorite death/black/thrash metal bands is Nunslaughter and they have a new full length album titled Satanic Chaos Legions. I've always felt there was a humor about their songs because of the titles and how over the top they were. This feels like a more grown up mature album from them or maybe I'm just used to them and their blasphemous ways. Love that devil metal!
Butthole Surfers have finally released their lost album After The Astronaut. I had to check this out. They had previously re-recorded a bunch of these songs for their 2001 album Weird Revolution. It's definitely an ambient sounding album and I'd understand if people don't enjoy it. I liked it though as a change of pace from my normal listening.
A trailblazer in the death/goregrind metal scene is the band Exhumed. Slaughtercult is their second album and it's a good one. It's interesting to note the lack of double bass on this album, insane.
One of the founders of modern death metal is the band Autopsy. Their sophomore album, Mental Funeral, is a real treat. This still feels fresh after 35 years.
