The quietest place he’d ever lived in, had been the first home he could remember well. It had been a small farm where, even though it was their job to bring life, there seemed to be very little life to be found. It had been unbearably quiet and he’d decided to be quiet too, as if keeping silent would let him hear the rest of the world better.

When he’d woken up after a trip down river that he neither remembered nor liked to think of, in the care of Ivo Kintobor, the world had been much more vibrant. It was like someone had taken his eyes and ears and adjusted the volume, until it reached the perfect pitch and vibrancy.

He still didn’t like to talk to people, but he did enjoy sitting and listening to the wind and the Flickys. He enjoyed talking the way Ivo taught him, with his hand instead of with sounds. Sometimes something would call him from far off, but he knew he wasn’t quite ready to listen to that yet.Meeting Tails, rescuing Tails, felt right. It felt like the first right thing he’d done for a very long time, and it was so very easy to keep the kid by his side. It would have been nearly impossible to let the kid go if he’d wanted to live.

Meeting Knuckles, once the echidna had stopped trying to fight him, had felt vibrant. It was the Island and his Master Emerald that had been calling him, it felt like coming home.

He still chased the wind. He still followed his feet from adventure to adventure. But it felt like he had a foundation now, one that was sprawled out between continents and people, a few settling themselves in other dimensions, he writes back and forth with Shahra sometimes, he visits Blaze when he can. He avoids the Princess Elise like a plague, the entire country of Soleanna with it.

He works on bringing some of his emotional walls down, a little, he knows that he needs to be there for Tails, that the rest of the group is old enough that he can rely on them as well. It’s hard.

And all the while sometimes the wind reaches through his window and calls him outside.
