A few days had crawled by since that intense meeting with the boys, and you'd made the smart decision to lay low. Of course, staying under the radar was proving to be way harder than you'd anticipated.
You were hunched over your laptop in some random café downtown, nursing your third cup of coffee and trying to blend in with the crowd of college students and remote workers. The familiar scent of espresso and pastries should have been comforting, but your hybrid senses were on high alert. Every footstep, every whispered conversation, every clink of ceramic made your muscles tense.
Just breathe, you told yourself, fingers drumming against the wooden table. You're being paranoid.
That's when a warm hand suddenly dropped onto your shoulder.
Your body reacted before your brain could catch up. Every predatory instinct you'd inherited from your Indominus and Indoraptor DNA screamed at you to strike. Your hand shot up, claws partially extending as you spun around, ready to tear whoever it was limb from limb.
"Whoa there, killer," a familiar voice chuckled.
Abbey. Of course it was Abbey.
You forced your breathing to slow, retracting your claws as you stared up at his annoyingly perfect face. "Jesus, Abbey. Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
He slid into the seat across from you, that trademark smirk playing on his lips. "Sorry, didn't mean to trigger your... instincts." His eyes gleamed with something that made your stomach flutter. "I've been looking for you everywhere."
"What are you doing here?" you asked, closing your laptop and crossing your arms. "And how did you even find me?"
"I have my ways," he said mysteriously, then leaned forward. "I wanted to see you. Just us. No interruptions from the others."
You studied his face, noting the way his pupils dilated slightly when he looked at you, the subtle flush creeping up his neck. God, not him too. The memory of that night flashed through your mind – his hands in your hair, the way he'd whispered your name like a prayer.
Weren't those moments good enough for him? you wondered, feeling a mix of frustration and something dangerously close to affection.
You sighed and shook your head. "Abbey, we talked about this..."
"No, you talked," he interrupted, reaching across the table to brush his fingers against yours. "I listened. But that doesn't mean I agreed."
Your golden eyes narrowed into slits as you fixed him with a predatory stare that would have sent most people running. The Indominus side of you wanted to bare your teeth, show him exactly what kind of creature he was dealing with. "Do you really want me in your little group, Abbey?" The question came out sharper than intended, your voice carrying that subtle growl that always leaked through when your emotions ran high.
His response was immediate, no hesitation whatsoever. Abbey nodded with such conviction that it caught you off guard, his green eyes burning with an intensity that made your hybrid heart skip. "The others are adamant about it. Especially Jinu." His fingers tightened around yours, thumb tracing small circles over your knuckles. "We all want you there. I want you there."
Why does he have to look at me like that? you thought, fighting the urge to lean into his touch. Like I'm something precious instead of something dangerous.
A heavy sigh escaped your lips as you pulled your hand away, immediately missing the warmth of his skin against yours. "I have to hear from HUNTR/X first." The words tasted bitter on your tongue, but you forced them out anyway.
Abbey's expression shifted instantly, his brows furrowing as concern flickered across his features. The way his jaw clenched told you he didn't like that answer one bit. "Are you a member of theirs?" There was something almost possessive in his tone, like the thought of you belonging to anyone else physically pained him.
"No," you said quickly, shaking your head. Your fingers unconsciously traced the faded scars on your wrist – remnants from the facility's restraints. "They're not like that. HUNTR/X... they were the ones who took me in when I escaped." Your voice grew quieter, more vulnerable. "After I broke out of InGen's facility, I was lost, scared, didn't know what I was or what I was capable of. They found me and gave me a place to belong."
At least, they tried to, you added silently, remembering all the times you'd felt like an outsider even among other hybrids and enhanced individuals.
Abbey's fingers twitched against the table, and you caught the subtle movement with your enhanced vision. "The boys would've taken you in too," he said softly, his voice carrying that raw honesty that always made your chest tighten. "We would've found you, protected you—"
"But you weren't there," you interrupted, the words slipping out sharper than intended. Your golden eyes flickered with something dangerous, that predatory gleam that reminded everyone exactly what kind of creature you were. "You're demons, Abbey. Powerful ones, sure, but you weren't there when I was clawing my way out of that hellhole."
God, why does he have to look at me like that? His green eyes had gone soft, almost wounded, and it made your hybrid heart do that annoying flutter thing again. Like he actually cares. Like he would've moved heaven and hell to find me if he'd known.
You pushed back from the table, the chair scraping against the café floor with a harsh sound that made several nearby students glance over. "We should head home," you murmured, suddenly desperate to escape the intensity of his gaze.
Abbey nodded slowly, then did something that completely caught you off guard. He rose to his feet and opened his arms—not reaching for you, not pulling you in, but simply offering. The choice was entirely yours.
He's giving me an out, you realized, your breath catching in your throat. He could use his demonic influence, could make me want this, but he's not. He's just... waiting.
You could've walked past him. Should've walked past him. Every logical part of your hybrid brain screamed that getting closer to any of them was dangerous, that you were already in too deep.
But your feet moved forward anyway.
The moment you stepped into his embrace, Abbey's arms closed around you with a gentleness that seemed impossible for someone with his strength. His warmth surrounded you like something ancient and protective, and you could feel his heartbeat against your cheek—steady, strong, alive. The scent of him filled your enhanced senses: cedar and something darker, something that whispered of power and promises.
This is where I belong, the thought hit you like a lightning bolt, so sudden and certain it made your knees weak. Not with HUNTR/X, not hiding in cafés, but here. With him. With them.
"I know you're scared," Abbey whispered against your hair, his voice so low only your hybrid hearing could catch it. "But we're not going anywhere. Whatever HUNTR/X says, whatever happens—we'll figure it out together."
Your claws pricked slightly against his back through his shirt, a involuntary response to the emotion flooding through you. He means it, you realized. They all do. Jinu, the others—they actually want me.
After a moment that felt both eternal and far too brief, you pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. The intensity there made your stomach flip, all heat and devotion and something that looked dangerously close to love.
"I should go," you said quietly, even though every fiber of your being was screaming at you to stay.
Abbey's hands lingered on your waist for just a heartbeat longer before he let you go. "Text me when you get home safe?"
You nodded, not trusting your voice, then turned and walked away. But you could feel his eyes on you until you disappeared around the corner, and the phantom warmth of his embrace followed you all the way home.
When you finally made it home, your enhanced hearing picked up the familiar sounds of movement inside before you even reached the door. The soft padding of bare feet, the rustle of fabric, hushed whispers that carried just enough tension to make your hybrid instincts prickle with awareness.
They're waiting for me, you realized, your hand hesitating on the doorknob. Of course they are.
The moment you stepped inside, you were met with the sight of Rumi and Mira positioned like sentries in your living room. Rumi's arms were crossed over her chest, her usually warm brown eyes sharp with worry and something that looked dangerously close to possessiveness. Mira stood slightly behind her, arms folded in a mirror image, but her typically soft features were etched with concern.
"Where did you go?" Rumi's voice cut through the silence like a blade, each word carefully controlled but trembling with barely restrained emotion.
God, she looks like she's been pacing for hours, you thought, taking in the way her dark hair was slightly mussed, the tension in her shoulders. They all care too much. It's going to get them hurt.
You deflected, glancing around the room with feigned casualness. "Where's Zoey?"
Before either of them could answer, your hybrid senses caught the telltale sound of rapid footsteps thundering down the hallway. A heartbeat later, a blur of raven-black hair and desperate energy launched itself at you with the force of a small missile.
"Y/N!" Zoey's voice was muffled against your chest as she tackled you backward onto the sofa, her arms wrapping around you with a grip that would've been crushing to a normal human. Her weight knocked the air from your lungs, but you didn't have the heart to push her away—not when you could feel the way she was trembling, not when her face was buried in the crook of your neck like she was trying to memorize your scent.
She was terrified, the realization hit you like a physical blow. They all were.
A sound escaped you—half sigh, half breathless laugh—as you let yourself sink into the cushions, one hand coming up to stroke through Zoey's silky hair. Her grip on you tightened impossibly further, and you could feel the rapid flutter of her heartbeat against your ribs.
"I'm okay, Zo," you murmured, your voice gentler than you'd intended. "I'm right here."
Rumi's sharp intake of breath drew your attention back to her. She was pinching the bridge of her nose, her knuckles white with the effort of staying calm. When she looked up, her eyes were glassy with unshed tears.
"You scared us," she said, her voice tight and strained, like she was fighting to keep from shouting. "We were all worried sick. Do you have any idea what it's like to come home and find you just... gone? No note, no text, nothing?"
The way she's looking at me, you thought, your hybrid heart clenching painfully. Like I'm something precious that almost slipped away. Like losing me would've destroyed her.
Mira stepped forward then, her usually gentle voice carrying an edge you'd never heard before. "We thought something had happened to you. With everything going on, with those demons sniffing around..." She trailed off, but the implication hung heavy in the air.
They think the boys would hurt me, you realized. They don't understand that the danger isn't from them—it's from what I might do to them.
You shifted slightly, Zoey still clinging to your side like a lifeline, and met both their gazes. The weight of their concern, their love, their desperate need to protect you—it was almost overwhelming.
"I know," you said quietly, your voice barely above a whisper. The admission felt like pulling teeth, but they deserved at least this much honesty. "Next time... I'll tell you before I leave."
If there is a next time, you added silently, thinking of Abbey's warm embrace, of the way his eyes had burned with something that looked like forever. If I don't completely lose myself to whatever this is becoming.
