Cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-sho-sheet), in Nahuatl, was a sacred flowering plant to the Aztecs or Mexica. From the leaves, the Mexicas could boil a tea to help the flow of breast milk in nursing mothers and use it as a red-purple dye for fabric and crafts. The sap was also used to soothe fevers and skin diseases. It also holds seasonal religious significance because it blooms during the winter solstice, the birthday of Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and war.

The cuetlaxochitl is native to Mexico, known is the US as the poinsettia. It was named for Joel Robert Poinsett, the first US ambassador/minister to Mexico, but I prefer the indigenous name.

My mom seems to think I’m some sort plant god cuz she keeps bringing me back sad, abandoned and emaciated plants from her work for me to miraculously bring back to life. The newest addition is a massive poinsettia that she, for some reason, thinks I can plant and cultivate in our backyard…

i don’t have much to say here. i actually really hate christmas lol. did you know the poinsettia has indigenous origins? it was taken and appropriated by the first us minister in mexico, who took the cuetlaxochitl name and bastardized it to be named after himself. fitting.

in the Aztec language Nahuatl, the name translates to the "mortal flower that perishes and withers like all that is pure." - i find that more powerful than christmas
