Being queer saved my life, actually
If you see a feminine-presenting trans man or a masculine-presenting trans woman and your first thought is to make comments like THIS (shown below), you are not as “woke” as you assume that you are in any way.
Clothes do not have assigned genders. Anyone can wear anything. Your judgment is simply alerting others to your bigotry.
😭😭😭😭
Hot fucking take o’clock: if you do not understand biphobia and what bisexuals specifically experience, and especially if you think bisexuals hold any privilege for their sexuality. you are not culturally queer. If you don’t understand why bisexuals take issue with someone refusing to date us SPECIFICALLY for bigoted or ignorant reasons, you are not culturally queer. If you haven’t bothered to engage with the literature or theory about one of the largest contingents of the LGBTQ+ community, you are not culturally queer.
Being culturally queer and agender is such an experience because unculturally queer people start trying to make me explain gender and I don’t even understand gender much because I don’t feel gender.
I don't like the term wlw nor I feel comfortable with being called sapphic.
No, that doesn't mean I don't like women. No, it doesn't mean I'll kill every poor soul that calls me any of those. No, it doesn't mean I like men. No, it's not selfish to not identify with those terms even if I'm the living, dictionary definition of a sapphic.
Just call me a lesbian, promise you, it's not that hard. There's really a difference between being lesbian and being a sapphic. Shit, sometimes I would even prefer people to call me a dyke instead of sapphic.
What do you mean when you say you're culturally queer? Genuinely curious about your experience if you want to talk about it
Yeah, so essentially being culturally queer is when you’re immersed in queer culture but not necessarily queer yourself.
Most of my role models have been drag queens, trans women and men, those of complicated gender, and a whole lot of gay folks of different persuasions.
I grew up in a really fucked up environment, and when I sorted myself out, it was the queer community (and the people in it) who were there to lend me a hand and help me find my footing.
I’ve said it before but the queers who raised me genuinely saved me from being the worst kind of person, and I’m immeasurably grateful to them. I will always have a deep seated reverence and love for the queer community because I wouldn’t be who I am without them.
If it’s a little difficult to understand, try to liken it to coda culture. They’re largely considered culturally part of the Deaf community, even if they themselves aren’t deaf.
Some people were raised in queer homes, some people married queer people (though not everyone married to a queer person may count as culturally queer. It depends on their circumstances.), some people have queer children (same as before).
There are a lot of ways to be culturally queer, and honestly I can’t imagine my life without the influences of queer people and queer cultures and subcultures that supported me.
