Anwhistle Family Book-Verse Edition (Hector Is NOT Going Solo!)
General Background (Featuring Others)
The Anwhistle Family is one of the oldest VFD families, barely beating out the Baudelaire Family for the title.
Mrs. Anwhistle is D. Snicket. Her husband is Z Anwhistle. Z’s mother (U) is the Anwhistle [by Blood], while Z’s father married into the family. Z’s cousin F is an Anwhistle [by Adoption] by U’s oldest brother (A). Z has another uncle (S) but no one talks about him (or to him).
F married into the Baudelaire Family. There’s an unspoken rule a VFD member must marry into the older/richer family. It’s money, not years, that became the factor that determined F becoming a Baudelaire.
D did give birth to an H Anwhistle: Helen. Like Lemony, Helen was dropped out of the car when she and Gregor were recruited (Gregor was 6, Helen was 3).
(By the way, regarding The Little Snicket Lad mentioning Lemony “tried to crawl away”: Jacques accidentally opened the car door, and Lemony fell out onto a soft pile of leaves and began crawling in the opposite direction.)
Unlike Lemony getting lucky and “tried to crawl away’, Helen didn’t survive her fall out of the car. D and Z found her body on the road, and thought their daughter was sleeping until they realize she wasn’t breathing.
Helen’s death resulted in the Anwhistles blackmailing VFD -with Ishmael’s help because he owes D a favor/being his favorite chemistry student back in the day- into giving Gregor back to them until they feel the time is right (it’s still ‘grab them by the ankle’ recruitment method, but it’s mitigated by the fact Gregor and Ike know about VFD and prepared them for it).
Hector being an Anwhistle by Adoption is a lie made by Gregor and Ike that spun out of control. While fun at first, when it came to dragging D into it, D had to put her foot down, despite thinking Hector would be a great addition to the family. While still mourning over H, D’s main issue is Hector isn’t an orphan.
Hector’s dad survived the fire VFD set when recruiting Hector, but by the time D and Z found out, Hector believed both his parents are dead. Z ends up heartbroken when he and D arrived to the VFD Headquarter, and became an acholic due to realizing he ruined Hector and Hector’s father lives.
Gregor and Ike are ¼ Mexican; Z is ½ Mexican so marrying D should make ¼. I’m unsure about my math.
Gregor Anwhistle
Wears glasses. Starting in his late teen years, Gregor decides to switch to contact lenses. He only wears his glasses if he lost his contacts.
Gregor is (was) close with Ike. Gregor promised himself he’ll do anything to protect Ike, and save him from VFD if the organization gets worse due to the Schism.
Gregor extends this promise to Hector, especially after learning about Hector’s complicated situation. Gregor isn’t close to Hector as he is to Ike, but Gregor can say he is fond of Hector, and wished the two were adopted brothers.
Growing a bit alongside the Snickets, Gregor got along more with them than Beatrice. Gregor will admit that the Snicket he got along the least is Kit.
While not an affectionate person, Gregor can get touchy-feely around people he finds interesting and usually tries to pull ‘experiments’ on them. Gregor did this a lot towards Widdershins; it snowballs into realizing Gregor has (unrequited) feelings for the man.
Started smoking the day he came of age. Gregor smokes as a way to deal with stress (especially everything regarding Hector’s complicated situation). If Gregor never died in the Anwhistle Aquatic Fire, Gregor would probably have died from lung cancer.
Gregor was researching something he dubbed ‘The Question Mark’ (The Great Unknown) in his spare time while co-creating the Mycelium with Mrs. Widdershins.
Has a scar on the right side of his face. Gregor got the scar due to encountering ‘The Question Mark’, which started his research into the mysterious being.
Hector, aka ‘H Anwhistle’
Hector, unlike Gregor and Ike, is 100% of Mexican descent.
Hector sometimes signs his letters as ‘H.A’ or ‘Hector A.’, as ‘A’ is the first letter of his actual surname. Ike more or less decided to exploit this to make them ‘brothers’.
Always has a love of (hot air) balloons since childhood. Hector would get his parents to buy one at the store so he can keep in his bedroom until they deflate on their own.
Hector’s dream of living up in the skies in a self-sustaining hot air mobile home came from him admiring his mother’s dream of becoming a seamstress and running her own boutique shop in the City.
His talent of cooking Mexican food came from his father. Hector wrote down all of his father’s recipes in a notebook.
Hector is almost the splitting image of his father as an adult. The three major differences between them: Hector grows out his hair, is much taller and skinner (resulting in a different facial structure), and black hair (Hector got his hair from his mother).
Not very good at photography, but it’s a hobby Hector enjoys doing at times, especially if it means he can take photos of birds (crows and ravens) and anything in the sky.
Hector’s return to the VFD got him ‘retiring’ from VFD, as he soon learns that one: his father survived the fire and two: his father died hoping his son will come back.
Hector suffers from extreme guilt of not defending Jacques in TVV.
Knows who were involve in Gregor’s death. Post-Canon, Hector has a Vitriolic Friendship ™ with Widdershins. Hector is kinder with Fernald on the matter, but still harsh due to what Fernald put the Quagmires and Baudelaires through.
Very tempted on picking up Gregor’s habit of smoking when stress. He lights the cigarette, but can never takes a puff from it.
Isaac ‘Ike’ Anwhistle
Ike was a very curious child, even after getting recruited into VFD. His curiosity transformed into (reckless) bravery when becoming a teenager and adult.
Growing up a bit alongside Beatrice, Ike got along better with her than the Snickets. Ike will say the Snicket he got along well with was Kit, pre-Anwhistle Aquatic Fire.
Ike realizes there’s an H missing in their family, and Ike made Hector that missing H, as he tends to pins things he did onto Hector. Ike pretty much was responsible for making people think Hector is an Anwhistle by Adoption, and has no regrets on it.
Ike is a veterinarian with an emphasis on aquatic medicine. He also has a part time job working the Fickle Ferry because VFD needs something there from time to time.
Even though he can have dairy products, Ike prefers to eat fruit sorbets, popsicles, and shaved ice than ice cream.
Loves eating Mexican food. Ike’s top three favorite foods are: tamales, conchas (a sweet bread that resembles shells) and huevos ahogados (it’s poached eggs in a salsa; the name translates into drowned eggs).
Ike had a crush on Josephine for a good year before asking her out. Before then, Ike thought of her as his grammar friend who also likes to break the rule about eating in the libraries (they enjoy eating crackers together).
Even though he’s upset with Gregor over many things -the Mycelium, Hector as a broad subject, hiding the truth about the real H- Ike never wanted his brother dead. Gregor’s death help start the pathway for Ike and Josephine’s ‘retirement’.
Josephine Anwhistle (Nee Gonzalez-Swayer)
Josephine is of Spanish descent; her mother was born in Spain before immigrating to Peru and then the City, while her father lived in Lake Lachrymose his whole life.
Josephine’s reading comprehension of Spanish —and other languages taught by VFD like French, German, Italian, and more— is better than her speaking and writing abilities.
Athletic™ when it comes to in-water sports that includes: swimming, rescue swimming, water aerobics, water basketball, and water volleyball.
Isn’t that Athletic™ outside of in-water sports sans basketball and volleyball.
Initially had no idea how to control a helicopter when starting her apprenticeship. Josephine almost destroyed the thing when first trying to fly it. By the time Josephine visits Lemony in Stain'd-by-the-Sea, she became a natural flyer.
Josephine didn’t find herself having a romantic interest in Ike until he graduated high school. She honestly saw Ike as a very good friend of her initial crush; Josephine had a crush on Hector. Dating Ike got Josephine to move on from her crush.
Josephine also had a crush on Kit, though Josephine constantly mistaken it as her admiration for the older girl. Josephine realizes her feelings when being happily married to Ike, and at this point both were out of VFD due to Gregor’s death.
Really likes eating fruit related desserts. Her favorite fruit is bananas.
Survived the Lachrymose Leeches attack, but ultimately died due to drowning.
The children of Charles Snicket: Delilah, Esther and Feivel
Delilah Beatrix Anwhistle, the eldest child. After her parents’ (supposed) death, she and her siblings were adopted by a terrifying woman, whom Delilah suspected of trying to poison her; D herself had a huge interest in poisons, specifically those from plants. The Botanist has a strong sense of self-preservation, and in fact consistently puts herself before anything else, including her siblings. She’s not prideful or arrogant by any means, but she’s not about to sacrifice herself for anyone else.
After escaping her guardian and being recruited by the Volunteer Fire Department, Delilah finds herself training under botany and toxicology. She also ends up marrying into the Anwhistle family. After joining VFD, though, she rarely talks to her siblings, though she’s not too concerned; she was never very close to them anyway.
Esther Maud Snicket, the middle child. Even before her orphaning, Esther was the ignored child, and a lifetime of neglect have given her high, thick walls to shield her emotions. Outwardly, she’s antisocial, sarcastic and bitter, but inwardly, she wishes she was closer with her siblings. Her parents always told her that Snickets take care of their own, but she’s never had reason to believe them.
She gets very involved with VFD, firstly because her special interest is private investigation, and the organization gives her the opportunity to become a detective. Secondly, though, she feels like the organization holds people who actually care about her... not the least of which being Jacob, who seems to be the only person who cares to listen to her.
Feivel Alan Caliban, the youngest child. He always felt separate from his sisters due to their large age gap and his tendency to go nonverbal. He tends to sit silently in the corner with his puzzle and strategy games, letting everyone else do the harder work. But while he cherishes being alone, he also wishes he could belong somewhere, with someone. But Delilah barely pays attention to him, and though Esther tries, she never seems to understand him.
VFD gives Feivel the opportunity to hide in the wings, completing increasingly complex puzzles and solving codes for their field agents. He loves his work, as it lets him do what he enjoys and gain a sense of belonging at the same time. He eventually marries into the Caliban family, and surprises even himself by being a devoted and loving father. He sometimes wishes, later in life, that he’d been able to connect with his sisters, because family is supposed to come first, but it’s a bit too late for that...

the mary moo cow thing: every time i look at the cow photo in tua, i’m just thinking, ‘okay, i know disguises work well, but there’s no way this actually looks like the photo.’ i ended up watching some old re-run of arthur on tv and went ‘screw it we’re going mary moo cow style’.
Re-drawn portraits/revise headcanons for minor canon characters (I drew them around the beginning of January). I also drew/headcanon my interpretation of their spouses on the other side, but I wasn’t happy with the final product so it’s not getting uploaded. From the three here and those that will never be uploaded, I deliberately drew all six of them coming from the 1960′s/1970′s (more 1960′s) either by clothing or hairstyle because I wanted to experiment with the decades for the fun of it (so it isn’t true 1960′s/1970′s).
An old mini comic that was originally plan as part three to a pair of comics drawn last year, but quickly re-design to be mostly a short stand alone with a similar theme. It also serves as a visual aid of sorts for a question that’s on my mind whenever I read the Unfrequently Asked Questions: Does VFD have ‘standards’ when it comes to recruiting volunteers?a
I actually made this last year, but I never got the chance to upload it until now. Some things change since then, headcanon wise. If I’m force to give names on the spot, I will answer at the top of my head: Daisy, Emily Elizabeth, and Francis. These names are not my headcanon names for them.
