The Snicket parents had strange taste in names.

They named their first son Jacques. That’s fine, but Jacques is a French name, and they’re not French. At least, Jacob isn’t a French name, and Snicket isn’t either. Albeit E’s full name is unknown, but didn’t the Snicket surname come from her?

They named their daughter Kit, which means something like “pure of heart.” At least, it’s full version, Katherine does. Is Kit’s full name Katherine? Because she’s always referred to as just Kit. I headcanon that her brothers used to get her gifts of different kinds of kits (disguise kits, makeup kits, etc.) as a joke.

Then they named their second son Lemony. Not even Lemon, Lemony. 

If they’d had a fourth kid, what name would they have chosen? Orangey?

anyway. thinking about how a parent's "nothing" response can be interpreted as "giving permission" going by the manual, a simple word that could've easily been said by a unknowing parent. that said, since e snicket is vfd and her reaction is more about, not getting to say goodbye, she doesn't seem that surprised and the snickets being taken is probably not unanticipated, just sooner than she expected. (so they probably gave permission, but thought the recruitment wouldn't be that immediate, or something?)

in the case a child has read the manual and decided to reply "if there's nothing out there, what was that noise", even if a parent had replied "nothing", while not knowing what that would mean, so technically it could be said that the parent didn't really give permission, but it might be argued that the child gave permission themself in this case.

"we get permission first when we enter people's homes, taking young children who show exception observational and/or notetaking skills" <- well the permission does not have to be from the parents.

probabilistically speaking, "if there's nothing out there, what was that noise" is far less likely to be accidentally spoken (even if the wording doesn't have to be exact) than "nothing", but it's not impossible. in fact, if a child has "exceptional observational skills", it'll probably make it likelier.

that said, if your sibling said that without your knowledge, does the volunteer listening outside know which child said the words? does it matter, in that case?

if the snickets recruitment followed the rough guidelines, then that means the phrase was said. did either J or K reply "if there's nothing out there, what was that noise" because they were instructed by their parent(s) this coded phrase (going with the assumption that they knew what the word "nothing" implied, and therefore did allow it, and therefore might've taught their kids)? did they read about it themselves, therefore knowing exactly what to say? or was it spoken, without the hidden meaning?

actually, "if there's nothing out there, what was that noise?" is the kind of thing young!lemony would say. the questioning authority kind of question. the curiosity. could it have been lemony who said it - perhaps not knowing what that could've implied? while little snicket lad said lemony was still an infant when they were taken, lemony himself said otherwise, in his letter. so he could have been old enough, too.

if lemony said it, unknowing it's a secret code phrase, and then they were taken - could J&K have wanted to shield him from this knowledge, because they don't want him to blame himself for getting them taken? does this play into how J insisted they were able to finish their tea, and J saying that the organization get permission first? (but that would mean E doesn't necessarily know what "nothing" would mean? or perhaps it was jacob who said the word? there's no proof that jacob was vfd).

All the Snicket name choices could be sorta explained by the Snicket familly weird tradition of naming their kids in alphabetical order.

That means that when Jacob and E. Snicket were expecting their first son they had to choose a boy's name starting with the letter J (and since is taboo for most jewish comunities to name a child over someone who is still living Jacob was out of question). So if you want a commom but not super common boy name with J is not that much of a reach they choose a french name without being French.

Same goes for Kit. They wanted a girl's name with K and Katherine is as classic as it goes. Till this point it just appear they like classic names that aren't too weird but also not too common either.

But than we have Lemony and my hc is that the parents were having to many missions/trouble with the twins that they didn't sit beforehand to choose a name. So suddently they had a baby in the dairy factory and maybe they went to a hospital afterwards (hopefully) or even just home but someone asked the name of the baby and they went FUUUCK and had to come up with a name on spot. It had to be a L name. And in their panicky state E looked at the twins and Jacques was drinking a pink lemonade and she though "Lemon' and pointed to Jacob that noded and answered "Lemony". After that until the moment of their deaths they would look very embarrassed to all the Luccas and Liams and all the diferent ways of creating Leos (not at Lukes though cause Luke is too common).
