The next D20 Fic-Off is just a month away! If you were thinking about joining us but haven't already, hop into the Discord to take part :) As always, this year's theme and teams will be revealed a week before the event starts; I'm sure you don't want to miss that!
Check out the D20 FIC-OFF! community on Discord - hang out with 124 other members and enjoy free voice and text chat.
a quick FAQ about D20 Fic-Off:
q: What is Fic-Off? Is it a standard fandom event?
a: Fic-Off is a [vaguely] annual month-long event where D20 fic writers align themselves with a team and write fics based on pre-determined prompts! There is every chance in the world there's a similar popular fandom event like Fic-Off, but it wasn't based on any preexisting guidelines in particular.
q: Teams?
a: Teams! We've had teams Cassandra vs. Ankarna and Populi + Phantasma in past events. Our teams are always connected to our overarching event theme. If you don't have a personal bias towards one team or the other, you can also tell that to the mod team and we'll assign you a team based on how balanced the numbers are looking.
q: How do I participate?
a: Everything is hosted on the Discord server, from team channels to submission forms for your fics. You will have to join in order to be recognized as a participant of the event.
q: By joining, do I have to post a fic? If I don't finish one in time, will I be kicked from the event?
a: Nope! People who want to join the server as readers are more than welcome to, and if you planned to write something for a team and didn't get around to posting it before the end of the event, we'll all cheer for you when it does go live.
q: What kind of fics did people submit last time?
a: The collection of last year's fics can be found at https://archiveofourown.org/collections/d25ficoff
q: I have another question!
a: Feel free to join the server and drop it in our ask-a-mod channel OR consult this overview document by one of our non-mod participants!
with part one here, i think i should move onto the second half of some of the many fics i enjoyed from this lovely event! these ones are significantly more heartwrenching, as a warning.
both of us half-damned. by @kipperlillycopperkettle
(fantasy high, 2k words, archive locked)
truly, jace is such the interesting character huh. he can’t call himself a victim so clearly they weren’t! and he’s a good guy! (<-he’s not. he just will not let himself deal) anyway i think ivy should punch him. as a treat
The Beast of the Farhaven Woods by @hectic-hex
(the seven/neverafter, ylfa&the seven, 5.4k words, archive locked)
this one is the stillness in woe of this post but for some reason putting this one with these felt right. ylfa and the seven oh my goodness. giving those girls a collective younger sister was such an amazing decision and i love how each of them tackled it differently. yelle&ylfa yippee <33
The Death and Afterlife of Kipperlily Copperkettle (and its AO3 link) by @scalematey
(fantasy high, twine fic, ~23k words with all routes)
listen. this twine? the coolest thing i’ve ever seen. There’s so many routes and no matter the choice you make, the story just gets deeper and deeper and it is a rabbit hole of loops and tearing yourself apart and. ohhh everyone go play this right now
how are you so loved and so lonesome? by @serenescribe
(fantasy high, 10k words)
a beautiful study in the past and the faeth family (’s collective inability to process or believe in themselves). heartwrenching is truly one of the best words for it.
Truman Show Complex [Series] by @levonleviathan
(2 works in series; fantasy high, 1.2k and 1k words)

i'd take your dreams and make em multiply by @lunarblazes
(the unsleeping city, pete&kingston, 2.2k words)
this isn't heartwrenching, but it's equally not lighthearted. it’s just beautiful. seeing the world from your opposite’s shoes; feeling an uncomfort in it and an understanding and an agreement that this is not you and you need to get back to your city the way you have it, not his.
go home and save what little you have by @luvo27
(fantasy high, 3k words, archive locked)
grief and mourning and humor and augh. it toes the line so well in a way only the seacasters can, i think, and it’s amazing.
don't you know there's a coffin buried under the garden by @vivitalks
(fantasy high, fig/gorgug, 19k words)
our boy gorgug is GOING THROUGH IT SO MUCH and it’s beautiful. it’s the perfect mix of dnd mechanics and fiction magic, and the descriptions are terrifying. he knows his friends too well. this does not quite help him.
storm clouds by @cookies-over-yonder
(acofaf, andhera&advisor, 656 words)
the andhera & advisor fic i needed in my life, actually. the emotions in this fic are so crisp and spirally and clear, and the care is even more palpable.
royal dues come calling by @serra-says
(fantasy high, 24k words)
TORTURE! THAT! BOY! WITH! THE RELATIONSHIP DEMON! Oh my god the terror and the pleading and baron’s voice. baron’s voice.
The Spring to my Autumn by @madgirlmuahaha
(acofaf, gwyndolin/binx, 2k words, archive locked)
for a character we don’t actually meet, gwendolyn really is haunting the narrative. But this precanon fic. augh. binx and gwyn’s relationship is heartwrenching and binx’s loss of all their relationships and their isolation and just. aughhh
Don't you wanna see what you've been missing? by @luvo27
(fantasy high, love potion'd riz, 11k words, archive locked)
luvo. luvo. luvo. killing you dead this fic made me so viscerally uncomfortable. it’s beautiful and painful and so, so good. screaming crying throwing up etc.
a failure of a mother & the daughter the other one tried to sacrifice by @arcanearies
(the seven, sam&rebecca, 3k words, archive locked)
the seven fanfic and it’s tragic both ways. god mourning someone who hurt you. mourning someone you think you should’ve saved. mourning your lack of anger. being angry.
Stuck In Your Head [series] by @mossterious
(6 fics; mentopolis and various, 2.8k, 3.1k, 3.4k, 2.8k, 3.1k, 2.8k)
what better way to analyze characters to literally send some other guy into their head? seeing how each of the prefrontal pis took to the scenario, too, was SO cool, and just. the care that they have for each other. <33

Summary:
“but i ignore things, and i move sideways / until i forget what i felt in the first place / at the end of the day i know there are worse ways / to stay alive” - noah kahan, growing sideways
The dust settles after junior year and the Bad Kids return to business-as-usual—or at least as close to business-as-usual as you can get after saving the world three times over before even graduating high school. Still, things are comfortable. Fig and Ayda are off touring the world, Gorgug and Fabian are finding their footing in their new multiclasses, Kristen is more devoted to and focused on Cassandra than ever, even around her presidential duties, and Adaine is coming into her own as an incredibly prodigious diviner and Oracle.
And Riz is... okay. Sure, he's still a workaholic, still stressed, still getting too little sleep and drinking too much coffee, but the weight of junior year is off his shoulders and he's starting to get comfortable with the idea of life after high school, whatever it may be.
Until a familiar, emotionless face makes a grand reappearance and threatens to topple what little emotional stability he's managed to build.
[dimension20, Fantasy High post-canon, Gorgug-centric, 2k, recursive fic, grief exploration]
Gorgug’s mostly successful in not focusing on the small things. His entire life has been a struggle between small and large, and the proportions of everything. How many small chairs can fit in a room if one large bed is already there, how much milk he should put in Fig’s tea depending on the size of the mug. Gorgug needed to learn how to be good at fractions and proportions when he was young, and it didn’t come naturally, but he figured it out. In the past six years though, Gorgug has never been able to figure out the scale of grief. It feels like it takes up more than its share.
OR: Gorgug has more emotions than he wants to about his father's favorite tie

Fabian is an exquisitely good liar. One has to be, to please an immortal parent and convince five incredibly powerful friends that he's constantly okay and maintain his Maximum Legend reputation. If he doesn't project perfect strength, perfect grace, perfect wit and humor (or what passes for it, at least) and laugh off every assumption against him, everything he's ever tried to build and be will fall apart. It comes to him as easily as breathing at this point--not the small stuff, the stupid stuff, like figuring out fake names and identities, but pretending he's okay? Simple. Effortless. Because he is okay. He has to be.
Unknowingly being under a slow-acting truth spell might screw all of that up, though.
...
Fabian gets hit with truth magic. Turns out his life doesn't, in fact, rule ninety-five percent of the time.
fabian vs truth serum vs hallariel. shockingly, the winner is not fabian

A ficoff fic, I missed the deadline for the prompt on this one for @d20ficoff (non-traditional format, in this case emails) but I think I like it a pretty decent amount anyways. Enjoy this insight into the work emails of the Aguefort Adventuring Academy!
