Deathskulls by Edward Delandre
Does anyone else miss the Girl Genius paper dolls? Here's something I put together long ago using the Oggie paper doll page. You can read about Oggie on the Girl Genius wiki.
Boy #10 (Ork#11)
And that’s my final Boy (from The Boys kit) finally painted.
I returned to my Skarsnik Green + Flayed One Flesh recipe and I’m genuinely pleased with just about every aspect of this guy. (I continue to be unhappy with the difficult-to-reach nooks and crannies on a fully built model)
He’s also my first propa kitbash with a spare Flash Gitz head instead of whatever the standard one from the kit was. I have no idea if it’s a thing in the game but in my head he’s the leader of this unit of Boys (he’s got Da Hat, after all).
Thinking about the scenes in RotK (film) just after Pippin looks into the palantir and the fellowship is having to make plans about what to do next.
Immediately following, Gandalf is briefing everyone on what’s just happened and what it means. I keep thinking about this very quick moment where Pippin, as he is sitting there dejected, perhaps having just been scolded (privately or in front of everyone), looks to Merry who is standing next to him, probably either to seek reassurance from or convey an apology to Merry, but Merry doesn’t meet his eyes, and Pippin casts his glance down again. And to be clear, I don’t fault Merry here for not consoling Pip, as Merry is, of course, (i) likely deep in thought about how to proceed (ii) maybe embarrassed on behalf of his cousin, and (iii) probably rather outdone with Pip for his constant display of immaturity and lack of forethought. We see this last sentiment pretty clearly in the dialogue of the next scene where Merry and Pip are walking to the stables together, and Merry is frustrated by Pippin’s inherent tendency to get into things he shouldn’t. Merry walks ahead of Pip without looking at him even as Pip is trotting to keep up, hovering over Merry’s shoulder hoping that Merry will turn and face him.
I just think these two short scenes are SO well written and acted because, specifically from Pip’s POV, they truly capture the feelings of despair, shame, and guilt that accompany mistakes, well-intentioned or otherwise. Looking for comfort in the one person you love and care for and not getting it (in the moment) because you messed up so bad. Trying to apologize for your mistake(s) and not being heard, or not having your apology accepted (or even outright ignored) because of how frequently you mess up, so your apologies don’t feel as sincere to those on the receiving end of them. Being confused when someone can’t understand your motivations and won’t accept your apology. Trying to explain yourself and your decisions/thought processes but not being able to separate them from your nature, so it just comes out sounding like an excuse. Making the promise of not messing up again, but knowing you inevitably will.
Observing these subtle body language interactions makes it all the more painful when the two of them have to separate shortly after. Pippin likely departs for Minas Tirith believing that Merry is upset with him (yes, I recognize we can treat the last of the pipeweed gifting moment as Merry offering an olive branch, but) because there was never any verbal acknowledgement or physical acknowledgement (no hugs or even pats on the back/shoulder) of Merry’s forgiveness. I imagine that Merry feels guilty about this lack of forgiveness as he runs to the tower to watch Pippin ride away, wishing he had comforted Pip more when he needed it, since he no longer has the opportunity to do so. Meanwhile Pippin likely spent a majority of the first day’s ride beating himself up for his foolishness and wanting nothing but just a little more time with Merry, but knowing he is the sole reason he can no longer have that.
Anyway, sorry this is long, these scenes are an absolute dagger through my heart and I love these precious hobbits.
