For clarity, no-one is "becoming" anything. The transfer of protagonism occurs purely at the level of the table – the in-universe party members aren't possessing whatever killed them.

For playability reasons, we follow the chain of causality until we bump into the first set of entities which are a. capable of independent action, and b. themselves able to be killed; e.g., if the party is stabbed to death by bandits, we then play as the bandits, not as their swords. This need not always wind up in the expected place, but it should at least wind up in a place where the new set of player characters can do things!

How does it work when the party wipes to a singular boss (e.g. a classic dragon at the end of the dungeon). Does one player get the boss and the rest its lieutenants/minibosses? Is the gm obligated to reveal that the dragon was part of a conspiracy of dragons? Does the party collectively play the dragon?

You know how a lot of old-school dungeon crawlers address the boss monster action economy problem by mechanically modelling a single large monster as a collection of smaller ones that each get their own turn each round?

(For everybody who keeps asking, if the party manages to wipe because of something that cannot causally be linked to anything that's even hypothetically playable at any remove whatsoever, you roll on the current dungeon level's random encounter table until you get something playable, and that's what inherits player character status by virtue of looting and/or eating your former party's bodies.)

lol GW is killing the blacklibrary.com website at the end of august and mandating everyone use their offical phone app. no more file downloads from them directly after that. they explicitly say if you want to use an e-reader that you should use a different storefront. so y'know, you should download your files while you still can.

also if you don't link your BL account to a mywarhammer account you'll lose your purchases. lol.

and to think, I used to consider their website better than most what with being able to download DRM-free files for me to use anywhere. lol.

anyways, figured I might as well share. I can't be the only one here who prefers to sideload.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this basically kills Black Library as a digital storefront, right? Other vendors are still going to be able to stock eBooks that we can actually READ on our preferred e-readers. Unless you’re clamouring to use GW’s shitty app, or they deliberately delay third party access to eBooks, why bother with them?

This feels like the potential first step in a process that will enable them to eventually monopolise digital access to their books by making other avenues of access arbitrarily difficult or non-feasible.

Overall, I think this is a rather foul and executive-brained decision that is going to result in less people reading Warhammer books and engaging with the written side of the hobby. It’ll probably bite authors in the ass, too.

And to forestall any “it’s to stop piracy!” arguments; we have years and years of data that shows, overwhelmingly, people who pirate something probably wouldn’t have paid for it otherwise anyway. This will not recoup theoretical losses or any of that shit - that is not how it works. That has never been how it’s worked.

Convenience and accessibility are, historically, huge deterministic factors in piracy, and a change like this will absolutely result in more people simply turning to alternative avenues. I, for one, am not purchasing a digital file I can only use in GW’s fenced in little app and don’t really own.
