Been reading more comics this year and decided to give 5 fictional folks the pixel treatment before Christmas. Gathered them all together for Tumblr today. Here's to my first year posting and to many more!

58. dagwood

i have so much to say. this post turned out too long, so i'm making a separate post on the difference between a dagwood and a scooby-doo-ass sandwich.

i've thought about her for weeks in advance. i considered going out to a deli i know that specifically sells dagwoods, but decided not to at the last second. i don't want to ruin some service worker's day. also, it's expensive.

so i made her at home. i used every single sauce, every cheese, meat, and veggie, i thought could fit. i tried vaguely to keep it somewhat cohesive. i tried not to waste food. i made multiple layers of each ingredient. i had to pin it together with a skewer to keep it from toppling. what resulted was approximately nine inches of

white bread,

mayo,

mustard,

thousand island dressing,

spinach,

sweet peppers,

tomato (roma),

gruyere,

colby jack,

ham (rosemary),

turkey (deli),

bacon,

egg (boiled),

onion,

cracked black pepper,

and pickles.

i had to sit for a minute afterwards. think about her, think about what i had done. it was such an experience. it didn't taste like all the ingredients cobbled together. it just... was. occasionally i'd get a crunch from the bacon, or a flash of vinegar from the pickles. but it was just one unit. somehow.

i expected a janky mess. awkward. unyielding flavors. instead? harmony. scrumptious. me, a person who thinks that club sandwich can be a little discombobulated sometimes. i fear you'll think i'm doing a bit, but i can't stress how serious i am. this was a spiritual experience.

i want to hang onto the skewer as a keepsake. but that's gross. more than anything i want another one. that frightens me a little.
