Given how Lotor seems more embarrassed than scared or resentful of his governess says a lot in my eyes, especially since it appears she is one of the few galra who genuinely praise him, I think she had big emotional impact on Lotor, I think she helped (in a way) that convinced Lotor that he was worth more than being Zarkon’s “shame” or Haggar’s “puppet” and most certainly of their dual neglect and spite. 

That’s about my impression? This is a quite expressive Lotor, which is a diametric opposite to how Lotor overwhelmingly behaves when stressed. Agitated Lotor, as we’ve seen, tends to be distant, cold, or else presents a very specific bluff, and he tries to leave the situation as fast as possible.

This shot in particular stands out to me because Lotor’s sort of... he’s not thrilled the way he was, say, talking to Zethrid back in s3, but, he’s also standing very close to Daiak and even when she makes sudden swift moves with that riding crop he doesn’t so much as blink. He’s a little embarrassed by her, is the impression, but he speaks very honestly to her in this clip.

And, yeah, honestly I’m willing to cut the lady some slack and assume that her stern / hostile attitudes belie good intentions. This is the first parent-figure in Lotor’s life to actually be happy for his accomplishments, and even her hostility boils down to she’s trying to aggressively enforce what she sees as proper decorum... onto Lance, because he’s in Lotor’s presence.

Which is a pretty big deal if you consider an awful lot of the characters in the empire, especially Zarkon and Haggar and their inner circle, are rude to Lotor all the time. And as I sorta poked at in my last post on Daiak (I sure hope I’m spelling her name right) that would imply she’s awfully unfazed by Lotor having murdered his father and made peace with Voltron.

I wouldn’t actively put words in her mouth and suggest that she feels like Zarkon had it coming, but that’s probably not her ‘mourning the prior emperor’ hood she’s wearing. She seems quite happy to see Lotor becoming powerful and influential, and quite determined at the idea that other people give him the respect he’s earned.

That said, I do have to wonder if it was Ms. “I knew you had it in you to destroy your enemies” here that was the one to train Lotor how to fight, given we know for a fact it wasn’t Zarkon.

Okay, y’all are going on about Allurance, Klance, Lotura, etc. this season and worrying/excited about your ships being undone/confirmed this season, and here I am just staring into the void wondering if Daiak is gonna woo Coran. Like, of course that won’t happen!...but what if it does?! We have Hunk yelling orders and pep talks to Galran soldiers, neko-boy ninja furry Lance, and now Lotor’s got a freaking Nanny! The creators could throw anything at us at this point, and I doubt I’d be surprised.

(I’m going to regret saying this in a few hours aren’t I?)

I personally do Not trust Tumblr’s cut feature. There are times when it works, and times when it doesn’t. In the last event I participated in, I found a solution to this problem.

The first post is a preview post with an sfw description and if it’s art, maybe an sfw preview.

The second post is the full post.

The first post will include a link to the second post. The first post will be what I reblog to event.

Fics posted on AO3 or fanfiction.net (if you still use that) may not need a secondary post, so long as the fic is tagged appropriately and labelled as explicit or mature.

The Week Has Ended!

And I'd like to thank everyone who participated~ we had some gorgeous, cute work for the week and I was so excited over the turn out with this being my first event run~

Now, if you haven't made any posts yet but would still like to, don't let the end of this week discourage you from posting, late posts will always be welcome cuz we'll always need some light hearted Galra content~ just keep using the #lhgw and #lh galra week 2018 tags and I'll reblog them~

So the new clip reveals that Lotor was actually raised by a nanny-like figure for what sounds like most of his life, given that she "raised him from boy to man". Do you have any thoughts on the relationship between Lotor and Diac (pretty sure I spelled that wrong)?

So I took a bit to mull over my feelings re: Daiak, but my cautious decision so far is she seems trustworthy. She comes off strong, but the in-universe reaction implies she’s supposed to, and while Lotor’s a bit flustered / awkward about this, that seems to be more down to embarrassment, and if anything... This is an especially expressive and open Lotor, and a sincere one. He doesn’t find Daiak threatening or dangerous and is comfortable asking her to dial it down.

It is also interesting that while she’s incredibly matronly and, according to Lotor, quite old-fashioned... she doesn’t seem particularly on board with Zarkon’s particular flavor of racism considering how quick she is to defend what she perceives as Lotor’s honor, and her comment about how she knew he had it in him to crush his enemies. 

You have to consider one of those enemies is Zarkon- and she does specifically talk about Lotor’s “ascent to the throne” that involved crossing Zarkon (fatally) and Haggar (though she sure survived). That, and how the target of her ire is Lance who’s the most flippant towards Lotor in this situation overwhelmingly sets up the idea that Daiak isn’t just a dour matron, but she’s specifically in Lotor’s corner.

Looking at Daiak as a caretaker- just the sample the clip gives us- and Lotor as a person, I have to wonder if Daiak contributed a lot of how, in the face of how much the empire looks down on him, Lotor will often produce this kind of, “I’m under absolutely no obligation to take this attitude from you, I am royalty, and I don’t care what you have to say about it.”

As far as Daiak’s role, it’s fair to assume someone had to have been there for Lotor. Presumably she was employed sometime after the snippet we see of baby Lotor, but simply, even if Haggar had remembered Lotor was her son, I can’t see either her or Zarkon actually taking time out of their lives to have patience for a child. So I’m not particularly surprised that she existed, though seeing her around in main canon is definitely gonna make things interesting.

I have to wonder if she’s going to end up as Sincline’s counterpart to Coran now.
