“Dark Shadows” audio book #1, Part 2
Written by Marilyn Ross
Read by Kathryn Leigh Scott
I began discussing the audio book of the first “Dark Shadows” novel here:

I finished the book last night. Here are my thoughts... some spoilers for a 54 year old book.
Like the TV series, it’s difficult to determine the passage of time between chapters in the book (or episodes). When I reached chapter 5 (about 40% into the book) as far as I could tell, less than 24 hours had passed. Victoria has already gotten into disagreements with Elizabeth, Roger, and Ernest (the concert violinist cousin). If there wasn’t a secret reason for hiring Victoria, Elizabeth should have fired her before the last train left out of Collinsport.
On the night Victoria arrived, her taxi had a flat tire, then she nearly walked on a rotting wooden cover over a well; the next day she was knocked unconscious in the cellar; and the third day the steering wheel in a car she was driving stopped working and she got into a serious crash. She ends up thinking someone is out to kill her and suspects everyone.
She has seen at least 4 possibly ghostly apparitions, suspect Ernest of murdered yet kissed him passionately moments later (and this was just 3 days after meeting him). And after less than a week the Collins family lawyer asks her to marry him!
An interesting element of the book is that Roger Collins is depicted with a far bigger drinking problem than the TV series - if that’s even possible. He’s also touchy-feely when young women are around (it’s suggested that is one of the reasons the previous governess quit).
Marilyn (Dan) Ross must have thought his readers had a short attention span and memory. If you played a drinking game every time he mentions Elaine’s death (Ernest’s wife) or Stella’s fall from the cliff (an artist who rented a cabin on the estate) you’d be drunk long before Chapter 5.
Other than introducing the various characters to Victoria, there isn’t much of a plot. Victoria tries to guess who her parents might be, considers which of the Collins is most likely, then suspect they are trying to murder her.
Finally in the last chapter, Carolyn tells Victoria an incredible secret. There’s one more major murder attempt and Victoria’s suspicions about Ernest are allayed.
The saving grace of the audio book is Kathryn Leigh Scott’s narration. She has a lovely voice, calming even. But I feel her pacing is a little slow. In Audible, you can adjust the speed so I listened to it at 1x1.1 - just a little faster without distorting her voice.
I thought it might be fun to listen to all the books, but I’m having second thoughts. I read many of the books as a kids so I must have liked them. But the repetition of plot elements is annoying to my more adult mind. Victoria is far too high strung. I’ll try one of the books that include Barnabas and see whether I like it or not.

Episode 646: Morbid games children play
The ghost of Quentin Collins has lured children Amy Jennings and David Collins to the room in the long deserted west wing of the great house of Collinwood where his skeleton is hidden. For the first time, Quentin appears. Later, a woman in a white dress will also materialize. Quentin. Screenshot by Dark Shadows Before I Die.
