OK, I definitely see why you love Beauchamp so much, @edettethegreat. I massively underestimated him.
Yes, he went to Janina to check the story, as I assumed. He found proof that Fernand was guilty, as I knew he would. But completely unexpectedly, instead of bowing to journalistic integrity and/or revenge for Albert’s unprovoked attack, he destroyed the evidence. Barring a sudden betrayal, which I’m currently not expecting, it looks like Beauchamp is not intending to publish the story and ruin the Morcerfs after all! Might someone else? Sure. But Beauchamp was really nice in this chapter, cancelling the duel and comforting Albert as much as he could.
Speaking of unexpected, Benedetto is now known to be guilty, but the wedding is still on between Andrea and Eugenie. So I guess MC is holding back on the letter about Andrea’s true identity until it can totally ruin Danglars. Hopefully before the actual wedding??? It sucks that Eugenie is going to just be collateral damage, but best-case: Maybe it’ll make her unmarriageable. I think she’d enjoy that quite a bit. Because it turns out she liked tolerated Andrea fine when he was an obstacle in her marriage to Albert, but now that he’s a potential husband himself, she’s suddenly not at all a fan. Fingers crossed for running off with Louise!
So anyway, Albert has no idea how to feel about his father anymore. He might’ve been more forgiving if he hadn’t heard the story directly from Haydee first, so that was definitely a master stroke from MC. So his father’s affection is now alienated. And the last quote of this chapter? “I love him! Let us call!” Said by Albert, about Edmond. NEW FATHER INCOMING AND I’M HERE FOR IT.
PS, 40 hours in!!! From now on, instead of counting up, I’m counting down. Cuz there’s 13 hours left, and that’s a solid time to start doing a T - 10 9 8 etc. And not a single remaining chapter is more than 40 minutes.
