Ballet Chronicles

You may or may not know, but I am a ballet dancer (unfortunately, I’ll never be able to pursue a career in it, because I’m too fucking tall). I’ve been dancing for about a decade and I’ve been en pointe for 2 years, and I really fucking love it. 

I thought it would be nice to write about my experiences in ballet class. I’ll also probably debunk some ballet myths. Maybe some of you are thinking about taking ballet or you may want to put your kids into ballet school; maybe you just like hearing other people’s ballet stories.

Minnesota Dance has a long and storied history.  While there are teams who seem to be always in the mix come the end of the season, there are others who do not have a less consistent record of landing in the big event.  This is a brief story about one such team, a team that won the first state tournament, won a national title in the 1980’s and has not been back to the state tournament in two…

One of my favorite dance memories was in a contemporary choreography class. At one point, our teacher split us into two groups, gave each group a piece of music that had no counts or accents, and challenged us to choreograph to it.

(My group’s music was so hard to choreograph to, and we hated it so much it became an inside joke, but that’s a different story.)

But the other group had this collection of jungle sounds as their “music,” and for their grand finale, without warning, they grabbed someone from my group and set her in the middle of the floor and started doing tribal dance moves around her like they were about to sacrifice her. We all lost it.
