Lesson 20 — Don’ts for Dancers. A page from the Arthur Murray book, Let’s Dance - 1937.
“Experimental Theatre and Dance Studios” [Columbia University, New York, 1988] _ Student: Alan New.
“The project lifted both the performance theatre [experimental] and the educational facilities [dance studios] off the ground level to provide a visual access between the interior block lawn and the street. Emphasising the ritualistic aspect of the arrival to a performance, while reclaiming and representing the institution’s integration of the public realm.” [Text by Alan New]
“Across Architecture” [Issue 5, ISSN 0266-6200], London: AA / 36 Bedford Square, pp.46-47.
I have a beef to pick with the state of tap dancing these days. Or at least tap dancing at all the studios in my area. There's like two dozen dance studios around our town, but NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH TAP. There's hardly any technique used. The routines are boring. They don't even wear heeled tap shoes anymore; just the flats. I was taught by both studios that i learned dance from that tap was full of intricate technique. You were making music with your feet, basically. The fastest routines I've ever performed were tap numbers (and I did it in heels!). It's sad to see that dance students aren't being taught how awesome tap can be. The teachers are more interested in teaching hip-hop or contemporary with tap seeming as just an afterthought.
there’s nothing like having to check people in for the recital of a studio you hate because you volunteer at the opera house they do their recital at. their dancing is not good
