鋦瓷Juci The skills with ~ ▪ 大漆 (Daqi) or“great lacquer,”:中國7000年古老的修復藝術 /It's another term for Chinese lacquer. The process involves natural raw lacquer harvested from the lacquer tree.
After sharing Master Lu Qinghua's video on the traditional art of juci /鋦瓷 (metal-stapled porcelain), many friends mentioned Japanese kintsugi. Before comparing these two techniques, it’s essential to understand their shared foundation—the Daqi craft. Derived from the natural resin of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), Daqi, through tapping, filtering, and oxidation, became one of East Asia’s oldest shaping and restoration materials.
🎋 Daqi : A Living Heritage of Chinese Civilization
▪ Neolithic Period (approx. 7,000 years ago): Red-lacquered wooden bowls unearthed from the Hemudu site in Zhejiang mark the earliest known use of Daqi in China. ▪ Warring States Period: Lacquered zithers and cloud-patterned cups from Chu tombs in Hubei, painted with cinnabar and azurite mixed into Daqi, retain vibrant colors after over two millennia. ▪ Tang Dynasty: Master Jianzhen introduced jiachu Buddha statues (layered linen and Daqi structures) to Japan, laying the foundation of Japanese lacquer art. At the same time, Daqi techniques like jiachu sculpture and lacquered screens flourished in Chinese Buddhist art and royal furnishings. ▪ Ming and Qing Dynasties: Decorative techniques such as carved lacquer and gold inlay reached their peak. The gilded lacquer dragon columns of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing’s Forbidden City remain a prime example. ▪ Contemporary Transmission: Daqi is still widely applied, from museum conservation at the Forbidden City to modern tea ware craftsmanship, actively bridging daily life and artistic creation.
🔧 Juci x Daqi : Metal staples stabilize porcelain; Daqi fills cracks and missing parts. Its strong adhesion, heat and water resistance make it essential in repairs. Lu Qinghua’s work shows this technique in action. 🔧 Daqi in Kintsugi : In kintsugi, Daqi is both adhesive and base. Multiple layers of lacquer, gold powder finishing—the craft takes weeks. Records from China’s Southern Song already described this use of lacquer.
I'll also share how Daqi and kintsugi (金缮) techniques work together in ceramic restoration soon.
