Rowena critiquing Charlie for seeing the brothers as family and giving them blind faith is so juicy. Rowena may not see the future but she knows well enough, with all of her talk of balance, that Charlie isn’t making it out of this. She said she read Charlie like a book the moment she met her, and what she saw was an unaware martyr.

Charlie tells Rowena she sees them like her brothers and that should be the warning signs for the audience. Anyone who has ever seen the brothers as family always gets caught in the crossfire. It reminds me of Adam because he was their biological brother, but at the end of the day, anyone can be collateral for Sam and Dean except Sam and Dean.

Rowena may be a master manipulator, but those are the skills that let her see the truth of Charlie. That she is doomed by the narrative just like all the others that came before.

The only irony of the situation is that Rowena herself will die for the Winchesters one day. That’s the way of supernatural, either die an antagonist or live long enough to see yourself become a Winchester martyr.

My SPN watch server just got to Dark Dynasty and let me tell you, that writing decision is still loathed to this day. We had to have a Discussion afterward, everyone had been really enjoying the show up to that point and after that they were left very upset. It was the first time since we started the show nobody wanted another episode right away.

And I genuinely get why. It was a pointless, unearned death for shock value and manpain. They fridged her for Dean's arc in a way that was completely unnecessary. They wanted to raise the stakes and push Dean past his breaking point, but it was on them that they waited an entire season to show him get meaningfully out of control and spent all their screentime having people SAY Dean was getting worse without actually showing it. To then turn around and kill one of the few recurring female characters--and at the time the only openly queer character on the show--to pick up the slack for their poor writing decisions really fucking sucks. And it did zero justice to Charlie's character, because her own death wasn't about her.

Like. She died OFF SCREEN. I don't think we ever fully grappled with that. We didn't get to see her go down fighting, or get an emotional scene of her final moments, last words. All we got was the suspense of Sam and Dean running to her and the horror of them arriving too late, that terrible shot of her body in the tub before the credits roll. Then the next episode is the emotional aftermath and what it does to Dean.

It isn't about Charlie at all. Her death feels uniquely insulting for that reason. I can't think of another character we spent such significant time with who was killed so pointlessly, off screen, in a way that had nothing to do with her. Jo died on screen, hunting, becsuse she went back for Dean, but her death and her final moments were about her. Kevin's death was horrible and was absolutely done to raise the stakes, but it was also on screen and at least somewhat about him. He was a target because he knew too much, was too much of a threat to Metatron's plans. Bobby's death was deeply poignant and entirely about him. A whole episode was dedicated to it!

But not Charlie. A pointless death that we don't even see, that has nothing to do with Charlie as a character or her arc, and that wasn't even truly necessary to the plot. Still one of the top 5 worst decisions the writers ever made.
