"Is that what Quist wanted to say?"

There has to be more to it. Atomic jetlag #Maybe or posion cannibal jetlag. This is shaping up to be a real snore. And i was absolutely wrong. I can't quite explain why but this is #Absolutely one of my favourite episodes yet. It's a lot of small things that all add up to a really fun whole. For a start the entire team #Is present for this one and they all actually get something to do. Lots of call backs to the start of the series and the enquiry into #Wrengate. Ridge and the Minister have a wonderful little discussion about politics. And the minister himself takes a central role which is #Fun. And Jen Wilson came back! And Duncan too! Plus Bob Urquhart is always tremendous in everything. Right towards the end i was starting #To think well yes ok where do we go with this. And then bam! A slightly unexpected but actually perfectly logical and sensible result of #Intense and purposeful jetlagging. Is jetlagging a word? To enforce jetlag. Anyway anyway. Idk. I really really enjoyed this one. Good good #I even forgive it the appalling cso in the new york hotel scenes (a hotel lobby is not a difficult set please do not float your cast in #Front of a blue screen just for this).

Doomwatch: Sex And Violence (3.12, BBC, untransmitted)

"People are continually saying to me: 'Arthur Ballantyne, you're a cultured, educated man. You love horses and dogs, you have an appreciation of the arts, you're a man of great sensitivity - and yet you espouse philosophies of racial hatred, sexual inhibition, violence upon the streets. We can't understand you, Arthur Ballantyne!' To which I reply: I did not invent racial hatred. I had nothing to do with the repression of generations of children. The anger in people is what makes them strike out, and that's there whether you or I like it or not."

"But you use it in a vain and comical attempt to get a dictator's power!"

"And why not, Doctor Quist? Why would you deprive me of the freedom to do that which is being done already every day - by politicians and journalists, and advertisers and businessmen? They make money out of it, they subjugate nations! They suppress minorities! And they do it under the mask of a so-called democratic society. It's their freedom to do it that we vote for! Well, someone else is getting into the act now. If... you have created a society in which a naked couple cavorting on a public stage is more shocking than a million on the dole; a hundred-thousand homeless; a half a million dead in Pakistan... don't blame me for taking advantage of it!"

Presumably because of the use of real footage of executions which is as disturbing as it sounds #But possibly also because it is so clearly satirising Mary Whitehouse and her clean up television campaign. For all that slightly #Ott aspects of the episode it's a very intelligent and thoughtful meditation on the potential ills of censorship and the responsibility (or #Not) of a governing body to safeguard moral wellbeing. It's a shame Ridge isn't around as he would have been great fun in this one #And Bown is of course a conservative dullard. Once again Doomwatch are on the periphery of the action and Quist himself asks why they are #Involved more than once. A great guest cast that includes old faves Horsfall (wash your mouth out Bernard!) and Wilde but it's #Nick Selby as the fringe politician funding the protests that steals the episode. Particularly his final scene with Quist in which he quite #Openly discusses his political motivations and the sheer hollow self interest which has led to him championing hate and intolerance in the #Masses. It's as chilling a bit of dialogue Doomwatch ever made and horrifyingly realistic and recognisable in today's political climate
