Doomwatch: The Plastic Eaters (1.1, BBC, 1970)

Oh i know it by reputation of course (not least thanks to some gentle persuasion from #@thisbluespirit that i should make it a priority to watch). But most of what i know about the series seems to be centred on the first two #Surviving episodes (for a long time the only ones readily available on home video I'm guessing) and I've never actually watched them so..#Here goes. This one is fun in a slightly gloopy and far fetched terror sort of way. But what a cast! Even the small roles have great actors #In them (always lovely to see Hawkins turn up as a grump and my Brothers mvp Wilson made me very happy). For all that the effects and the #Melting aeroplane are a bit silly the actual tone is surprisingly grim. I mean this begins with a plane crash. Oh and what a beginning too #The fade from the crash into the video static and ominous theme of the opening titles? An editing masterpiece #Our characters are still only briefly sketched in here but I'm sure i will come to love them all. Especially Robert Powell's Toby Wren.#Gosh i hope nothing happens to him..... (ok maybe i know one other thing about Doomwatch)

Doomwatch: The Human Time Bomb (2.10, BBC, 1971)

"Look, we don't intend to imprison a lot of people in little boxes like a lot of broiler chickens."

"I'd say that's exactly what you are doing."

"On the contrary! We want people to be happy."

"Of course, every farmer knows that unhappy chickens go off their feed."

This is an intensely frustrating experience because although the episode as a whole is a bit of a dud as #@thisbluespirit had warned it does contain the framework of something very very good. The horrors of high rise living was (and to a degree #Remains) a very timely and relatable concern. And again the show accurately comes down on the right side of things in predicting that #Anonymous grey blocks of living space have a detrimental effect on mental health and overall wellbeing. But marks spoils it by focusing so #Much of the episode on what a troubled lady dr Chantry is and how her feeble woman self can't stand up to the strains of investigation (the #Same dr chantry who quite capably coped with a deadly virus killing schoolchildren in her first episode) and by having Ridge and worse #Quist treat her like a hysterical little girl. It's horribly patronising and entirely out of character for them all (well certainly Chantry #And Quist). A strong but large guest cast means great actors like McMillan and Philip Bond are sidelined in very minor roles #A lot of potential here for a j. G. Ballard style critique of batteryfarm living but let down by Marks' mishandling of the leads #Kemp welch's direction however is urgent and effective so this is at leasy more compelling than the islanders

Doomwatch: Public Enemy (2.13, BBC, 1971)

"Raise production! Raise consumption! Raise wages. Advance the standard of living. But is anyone any happier? All that happens is that the debris that must inevitably accumulate in the process slowly builds up, until one day it's going to choke us. Now, don't think that I'm speaking as a government official-"

"Oh it's alright Quist, there's no-one here to quote you."

"-because the government doesn't want you to go to Leicester any more than you do."
