Being a Curtis meant living in constant change. No matter what day of the week it was or the season, every single day was completely different from the last. From waking up to an actual breakfast to having chocolate cake for every meal. And it wasn’t like your family never accepted the change, but change was always something hard for your family to cope with—especially after your parents had died a year ago.
So when Ponyboy accidentally found out that you—his older sister, his only sister—were seeing Dallas Winston—the boy who’s been to jail more times than he could count—behind everyone’s back, he was too shocked to even utter a word at the sight.
He didn’t even mean to learn about your relationship with Dally—it was on pure accident. He and Johnny simply wanted advice from Dally, and Buck had let them inside his house. It wasn’t his fault that Dally left his bedroom door unlocked when he clearly had company over.
When the door swung open and revealed Ponyboy and Johnny, you immediately pulled away from Dally, scrambling to get off his lap while throwing a pillow in Dally's direction. Ponyboy immediately spun around and squeezed his eyes shut, tugging Johnny around as he stood frozen in fear and shock.
After what seemed like ages of shuffling around, the both of you were finally decent, although the smudges of gloss and lipstick around Dally's mouth seemed to remain.
He sat up properly and looked at you in amusement before putting a hand out toward the youngest Curtis in efforts to get him to focus on something other than walking in on his sister making out with a juvenile delinquent. “Listen, kid—“
“Don’t you dare say anything right now.” You glare at Dally before slowly moving toward your brother, approaching him like he was a wild animal. Ponyboy hadn’t said anything for the past five minutes, and you were starting to get worried that you broke him with one terrible interaction. “Pony—?”
“You’re dating Dally?” Ponyboy finally said as he turned back around to face you, staring at the two of you like it was the craziest thing in the entire world. He bit the top of his thumb and looked around the room, trying to distract himself from unwanted thoughts. “Does Darry know?”
You shake your head and gently move his hand away from his mouth, getting him to look at you. “Darry does not know, and he won’t know until we tell him, got it?”
Ponyboy’s eyes widened as he began to pace Dally’s room, mind running millions of miles per second. He wasn’t sure if keeping your relationship hidden was a smart move, but he couldn’t tell Darry without you knowing—you would kill him. And what about Sodapop? Surely he deserved to know about you and Dally, he wasn’t a snitch and he definitely wouldn’t be the one to tell Darry either.
Johnny watched Ponyboy cautiously, fingers playing with the buttons on his jean jacket for a lack of movement compared to his best friend. He wasn’t surprised that you and Dally ended up together—hell, Dally had told him that he liked you when he got drunk once. He didn’t know exactly when you got together, but it wasn’t Johnny’s place to tell anybody about your business or Dally’s business.
“Man, how did y’all even start dating?” Johnny asked to no one in particular as he continued to stare at Ponyboy, a small frown tugging at his lips.
“Uh, dunno, just happened one day.” Dally laid back on the headboard of the bed and lit a cigarette he found behind his ear, blowing the smoke high into the air before you could reprimand him.
You raise your brows at Dally’s words, looking back at him in surprise before rolling your eyes at the cigarette hanging from his lips. Dally loved to tell the story of how you two started going out, but you weren’t exactly sure what was stopping him. He would only be telling Ponyboy and Johnny.
“You are a terrible story teller.” You huff and put your hands on your hips, “You really aren’t gonna tell them?”
Dally took another drag from the cigarette, shrugging in response before a wicked grin made its way onto his face. He stood from his spot on the bed and wrapped an arm around your shoulders, leaning his body against yours until you supported half of his weight.
“I’ll tell them how it ended, doll, how ‘bout that?” He said with the same damn grin, making you narrow your eyes at him, almost daring him to tell the two boys how that night ended. “Well, the story ends with me and girl Curtis tangled up in those sheets back there—“
“Okay, gross, shut up.” Ponyboy groaned and covered his ears, Johnny burning a bright red at the unwelcome thoughts. Ponyboy still kept his ears covered, “I’ll keep it a secret for as long as I can, but Soda and Darry are bound to find out sooner or later.”
After you finish jabbing Dally in the stomach for his crude behavior, you look back at your brother and remove his hands from his ears. “And we’ll cross that bridge when it happens, for now—“
You take Johnny and Ponyboy by their shoulders and turn them away, walking them to the doorway of the bedroom. “—I want to spend time with my boyfriend alone, alright?”
The two boys nodded and made quick steps to leave the place at once, doing their best to forget anything Dally had told them in the last minute of their life. You sigh and move to close the door when Dally props his head out the doorway.
“She’s a great broad, Ponyboy!” Dally shouted as he yanked the door back open, earning a scowl from you. He shut the door and locked it, giving you grin. “In the best way possible, doll.”
Although you wanted to spend time with Dally after Ponyboy and Johnny interrupted your make-out session, he really ruined the vibe with his parting words for the two boys. You ignored Dally as he tried to pull you in his arms and moved to sit on his bed instead, crossing your legs and arms then looking away.
Dally rolled his eyes and snubbed out his cigarette before taking a seat beside you, wrapping his arms around your waist and pressing kisses to your neck and jaw.
“Come on, doll face.” He murmured as his hands wandered underneath your shirt. “You know I like you.”
You turn your head slightly and meet his eyes—the ones that only soften around the edges when he was with you. You bite your tongue when he trailed his hands across your stomach, “Do I?”
Dally propped his chin in your shoulder and pulled your legs apart, slotting himself in between and pushing you down onto his bed. “If you wanted to make-out, you could’ve asked without being so quiet about it.”
You pout jokingly before cupping his face and pulling him in for a kiss, separating when his St. Christopher pendant pressed coldly against your neck. “Where’s the fun in that, Dal?”
“Man, what’re you gonna do about it? We’ll all be at the drive-in tonight.” Johnny kicked a rock as he walked beside Ponyboy, his tattered converse scuffing the cracked concrete as they returned to the Curtis house.
Ponyboy had been wanting to go to the drive-in for weeks after they announced they would do a double feature of Paul Newman movies. Tonight was the last night and Sodapop thought it was a good idea to drag everyone along—even Dally.
When Sodapop suggested the idea, nearly everyone was on board, but Ponyboy nearly felt his eyes pop out of his skull. If you and Dally were at the drive-in together, who knew what was going to happen. Although you were secretive about it, Dally would do anything to claim what was his.
“I’ll keep my damn mouth shut, that’s what.” Ponyboy stuffed his hands into his pockets as he kicked the fence gate open. “I’m sure they’ll be just fine with the rest of the gang. Besides, what could really go wrong?”
Apparently everything could.
When Sodapop said he was going to drag everyone to the drive-in, he truly meant everyone. He begged Darry far too many times that he eventually gave in and tagged along. Darry didn't want to go, but Sodapop wasn't going to stop until he got his way.
So Darry was also at the drive-in. Unfortunately for you and Dally—fortunately for Ponyboy—Darry sat in between the two of you, afraid that his younger sister might be tainted by the one and only person who could truly ruin her.
Too bad Darry didn’t know you were already Dally’s.
From where you sat, you watched Dally become restless beside Darry, making you bite the inside of your cheek. You knew he was itching to just talk to you even for a second, but Darry being there made it nearly impossible to even breathe near one another. Instead, you met his eyes and cocked your head to the side.
“I’m gonna grab a drink from the concession stand.” You announce loud enough for Dally to hear, but quiet enough to not disturb any of the other attendees.
Darry muttered something incoherent and handed you some change, watching you leave before switching his attention back to the projector. He looked over to his left and noticed that Dally had left too, raising his eye brows at the sight.
“Where’s Dally?” Darry asked out loud, earning shrugs from the rest of the boys—except for Ponyboy.
Ponyboy froze at the question and looked to his right, groaning when he saw Dally's empty seat. He should have known you two would try to sneak away together for even a moment. He mentally cursed both of you before excusing himself, leaving to find the two of you before Darry found you.
While back at the concession line, Dally was all over you. His arms were wrapped around your waist, head tucked into your neck and shoulder, murmuring words he wouldn’t dare say to anyone else.
If Darry saw you now, you’d both be dead in an instant.
“You missed me that much?” You murmur as he nods, continuing his kisses across your neck. “It’s only been thirty minutes—“
“Doll, I haven’t seen you all day.” He muttered and moved to wrap an arm around your shoulder instead, planting one last kiss to your jaw before complaining once more. “And your damn brother is making it real difficult for me to even talk to you.”
“If you hate it so much, then why’d you agree to come?” You roll your eyes before smiling brightly at the cashier, ordering your coke and a small bag of popcorn you knew Two-Bit would want after you returned.
Dally paid for your order before turning back to the conversation. He huffed and rubbed his jaw, voice low in annoyance. “'Cause I didn’t know Darrel was coming.”
You look up at him after grabbing your drink and popcorn, a teasing glint in your eyes. "You afraid of lil' ol' Darry?"
“Lil' Ol' Darry is a twenty year old man with pure muscle, and I'm datin' his little sister. You tell me.” He directed you toward the back of the seats, not wanting to go back to being separated just yet.
You took a sip from your coke and frowned at his words, looking down at your shoes for a second before Dally noticed your change in appearance.
“What?”
“You know we eventually have to tell Darry. Soda too.” You say quietly and stir the straw, the sounds of gunshots from the movie speakers ringing through the air.
Dally groaned and fiddled for a cigarette in his jean jacket, cupping his hand around the flame as wind blew through the night air. “You’re tryin’ to kill me, doll.”
You scoff and steal the lighter from his hand, “They’re still my family. I can’t just never tell them that we're going out Dal, that's not fair.”
He looked around for a second, poking the inside of his cheek with his tongue before looking back at you—shaking his head on how easily you could break his usually tough demeanor. “Alright, when do you wanna—”
"What are you two doing?" Ponyboy finally found the both of you, looking at you and Dally with so much annoyance you swore everyone at the drive-in could feel it.
"I was just getting a coke." You mutter and catch your brother's gaze.
"What's your excuse, Dally?" Ponyboy asked.
He sighed and put the unlit cigarette behind his ear, "Accompanying the missus."
Ponyboy's eye twitched and—for a second—Dally could see a vein pop on his forehead. "Are you both crazy? Darry immediately noticed that Dally was missing after you left—!"
"Sh!"
Dally rolled his eyes at the patrons before responding, thumbs looped in his jeans. "Listen, Ponyboy. I was just askin' your sister when we should tell Darrel and Sodapop—"
“Tell Darrel and Sodapop what?” Darry’s voice cut through Dally's explanation, causing you and Ponyboy to wince and face your older brother in fear.
Not only was Darry standing there with his arms crossed over his chest, but so was the rest of the gang—all of them expressing different emotions at the display. Sodapop wore an amused grin, Two-Bit stared with an open mouth while handing Steve a five dollar bill, and Johnny looked like he was about to run away from the scene.
Dally spun on his heel and put his arms on his hips before turning back around, head shaking in confusion and sudden frustration. “Where the hell did you come from?”
Darry narrowed his eyes at the boy, "I was going to look for my sister since it was taking an awfully long time to grab a singular drink, but then I saw Pony rushing over here like he was on fire or something."
“Darry—“ You try to stop the two boys from starting anything they didn't want to finish, only to be cut off by Darry and his disappointed glare.
“Don’t get me started on you." He shook his head and redirected his gaze back toward Dally, the heat returning to his blue-green eyes. "I want to hear from Dallas.”
Silence took over the group, everyone’s eyes darting between you and Dally to Darry. Ponyboy slowly ebbed his way over to Johnny, picking at his nails in nervousness. He should’ve known this was gonna happen when he left.
Finally, Two-Bit spoke up, trying to ease the tension but ultimately being ignored by the majority. “Oh, come off it, Darry. They ain’t causing trouble.”
Dally clicked his tongue and rolled his shoulders back, projecting enough confidence that surprised Johnny and Ponyboy. “Well, since you oughta know now, me and girl Curtis are going out.”
Sodapop’s grin widened when he saw you—his little sister—flush red, “Well, shit. I thought that was obvious when we came over. I think Darry just wanted a denial from y’all.”
You pursed your lips and watched Darry’s eyes narrow at the two of you, his fingers twitching for a split second before he moved. He took long strides over to Dally and gripped his arm, pulling him away from you and taking him to the other side of the drive-in. You bite your tongue, holding back any sounds of protest as you watched Dally and Darry speak.
“You didn’t think to tell us before Darry tries to kill your boyfriend?” Sodapop tilted his head and occasionally darted his eyes toward his older brother, watching him closely to ensure he didn’t blow his temper in a public space full of socs.
“I was gonna ease it in.” You sigh and drag your hand down your face in frustration, flicking a piece of dirt off your shirt. “You know how Darry gets when a boy looks at me, let alone Dally. Hell, he almost wanted to kill Steve when he took me to school the other day.”
“Not a fun memory, by the way.” Steve quipped from where he stood by Two-Bit, earning an eye roll from Ponyboy and a snort from Sodapop.
You raise a brow at them before waving a hand in the air, “If it makes you feel any better, Johnny and Ponyboy already knew.”
“What?” Two-Bit spun around and gawked at the two youngest of the gang. “And you didn’t wanna tell anyone? I could’ve won a bet with Steve!”
“Sh!”
“I promised to keep it a secret!” Ponyboy defended himself and crossed his arms, looking at you with slight annoyance. “It’s gross if you ask me.”
“Sh!”
“Mind your own business!” You and Steve whipped over to the old couple who kept shushing your group, watching them shake their heads and mutter something about ‘kids these days.’
Johnny scratched the bruise on his jaw, voice quiet after being told to shush too many times. “We found out on accident. Besides, there’s no good in arguing about it now.”
Before anyone else could add anything else to the matter, Dally and Darry came back. Neither of them expressing what they truly felt on the inside except. The only thing revealing their feelings were their eyes.
Darry looked like he could beat the living shit out of someone whilst Dally looked a little too proud for your liking.
Everyone held their breath but exhaled silently when Darry stole the keys back from Sodapop.
“Let’s go.” He beckoned his brothers away from the gang, looking back at you with the same disappointed look he gave you earlier. “Say goodbye. We’re leaving.”
You waited for them to disperse before looking up at Dally with crossed arms, “What did you two talk about? Darry looks like he was going to actually kill you.”
“Don’t worry about it, everything is fine, doll.” Dally ran rough fingers up and down your spine, watching your rigid figure soften. “Trust me.”
“Worst thing I could do is trust you right now.” You sigh and fiddle with your jacket’s zipper, your voice barely above a whisper. “He’s not mad?”
“Fuckin’ fuming, doll.” He fished the lighter out from your back pocket and lit his cigarette, blowing the smoke toward his right. “But Darrel said as long as I treat you like the woman you are, he’s okay with it. He put stupid quotations around it too.”
“Which means he’s not okay with it.” You groan and smack his chest with the back of your hand, putting your hands on your hips. “I’m blaming you if I see you with a black eye and bruises in the next few days.”
“You’ll still like me and my charming smile.” He tucked the lighter back into your back pocket and pulled you closer.
“Unfortunately.” You tease before pushing him away when you heard Darry’s protests from the entrance of the drive-in. “I gotta go, Dal.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, doll.”
“Maybe don’t come around our house just yet.” You kiss his cheek and look over back at your brothers:
Darry spun his truck keys around his fingers while he bore a hard stare into your skull, Sodapop tried to distract him, and Ponyboy spoke to Johnny, his eyes constantly darting back to you and Dally.
You turn back to Dally, lips turned down into a small frown. “Darry might kill you.”
“Whatever, man.” Dally ignored Darry’s stare and placed his index and thumb on your chin, pulling you mere centimeters away once more. “I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”
“Fine.” You give-in as he placed a rough kiss to your lips.
You hum into the kiss before pulling away with wide eyes when he tried to deepen it, head immediately whipping over to the entrance where Darry was already heading toward the two of you.
“Jesus, you have a death wish.” You say quickly with a pink face before you felt someone’s hand on your shoulder.
“Get in the truck.” Darry pulled you away and shot Dally a dirty glare. “I said say goodbye, not make out with him.”
You shrug his hand off your shoulder and tuck your hands under one another, eyes hardened in frustration for both your brother and boyfriend. “I wasn’t!”
Darry muttered something under his breath and opened the back door for you, slamming it when you got it. You dug your nails into the seats, anger flaring in your eyes—just like your oldest brother.
“You like him.” Sodapop teased from the front seat of the truck, earning a glare from both you and Darry. He tossed his hands in the air, “What did I do?”
“Man, you and Dally are gross.” Ponyboy murmured in your direction and earned a flick to the arm from you. “Ow!”
Before you could get him back, Darry’s voice boomed in the car, causing everyone in the car to freeze like a broken movie frame.
“Quit fightin’ or you’re both walking home.” He huffed as he started the truck, driving out of his parking spot and down the cracked road toward the East side of Tulsa. “Can’t believe a simple outing turned into a lecture for my kid siblings.”
“We didn’t even finish watching the movie—“
“Sodapop, I swear to God—“
“Hey! I’m not the one dating Dallas Winston!”
“Soda!” You hit his arm when he mentioned your relationship with Dally, making Ponyboy hit you in retaliation and defense. “Ow!”
Darry slammed on the brakes and stared at the three of you in frustration, everyone’s eyes wide at the sudden action. “I want you three to shut up until we get home. And before you say anything else, I don’t want anymore talk about Dallas Winston tonight, got it?”
The three of you stilled and stared at the carpet of the truck, murmurs of agreement in the air.
“Good.”
Unfortunately for Darry, before he could move again, Sodapop’s eyes darted toward the side mirror, catching a figure running up to the truck. With the familiar leather jacket and heavy, worn boots, he instantly knew who was approaching the truck.
“Isn’t that Dal?” He asked quietly, causing the everyone to turn back and stare at the figure.
Dally pulled the door open and stared at you for a second, your eyes wide in confusion. “What are you—?”
“Sorry, forgot something.” He dug his hand into your back pocket and took the lighter back from you, sneaking a kiss to your lips before leaving.
Ponyboy nearly gagged at the sight and Sodapop wanted to whistle, but refrained after seeing his older brother’s pissed expression. You stared at him with wide eyes as Dally backed away, shutting the truck door and winking at you.
His devil grin glinting from the moonlight, “I’ll see you tomorrow, doll face!”
“Dallas Winston!” Darry shouted.
