Festival of Dashain, devotees offering lamps to Devi, Nepal

Lasting fifteen days beginning today, Dashain, which recognizes the triumph of good over evil, is the longest festival celebrated in Nepal. Devotees often read the Devimahatmya aloud, as its recitation is believed to invoke the presence of the goddess Durga. The Devimahatmya is a collection of hymns glorifying her that culminates in the episode of Durga vanquishing the buffalo demon. As a physical embodiment of Durga, a manuscript of the Devimahatmya may itself be worshiped as a sacred object.

This copy is written on palm leaves sandwiched between wooden covers whose interior illustrations show both battles with demons and Durga peacefully granting boons to her devotees.
