heeey! omg yes i’ve thought about deaf remus a lot and i lowkey love the idea of deaf!remus & wolfstar interactions (obviously)

remus lost his hearing really young (illness, maybe, or smth). he wears hearing aids sometimes but not always, especially at home. sirius learns very quickly that “are you wearing them?” is a practical question, not a rude one.

sirius absolutely learns sign language. like fully commits. downloads apps, takes classes, practices in the mirror. he fingerspells “i think you’re hot” wrong for weeks and remus pretends not to notice because it’s cute.

remus prefers signing over lip-reading because lip-reading is exhausting. sirius makes a point of always facing him when he talks. if he forgets, remus just snaps his fingers once and raises an eyebrow. sirius immediately pivots like sorry sorry love <3

honestly it’s really important to them, because once when sirius said “i love you” in french for the first time, remus caught the shape of the words but not the meaning and just went like … okay that was romantic but in what language.

signing is great for them btw, because sirius is very tactile. he touches remus’ wrist lightly to get his attention, squeezes his knee under the table when a joke is being made, presses his forehead to remus’ temple when the room gets loud and chaotic, so they really enjoy showing what they feel in gestures.

remus loves loud music because he can feel the bass through his whole body. sirius buys a stupidly expensive speaker just so remus can sit on the hardwood and feel it vibrate through his spine. they also dance together in the living room barefoot.

they develop their own shorthand signs. sirius invents the ones that mean “you looks so pretty, i want to bite you” & “stop being so stubborn” and remus invents the ones that means “i know you’re spiralling, talk to me” & “i want you, now”. it becomes their own system.

fights hit different for them i think. if sirius storms off mid-argument and keeps talking from another room? useless. he has to come back. he has to face remus. they have to look at each other, and it kinda forces honesty, which is a good thing.

when the lights are off, sirius traces words on remus’ skin (slow letters across his shoulder blades or stomach or chest or forearms). remus always guesses them. sometimes sirius cheats and just writes “my moon” to express his affection.

remus loves when sirius mouths things against his skin. collarbone, shoulder, jaw. he can’t hear it but he can feel the breath and see the shape if he pulls back.

sirius is obsessed with making sure remus never feels left out in group settings. if someone talks over him or turns away while speaking, sirius just goes “face him” and it honestly looks like he’s about to start hissing to make sure his man is not being left out.

remus loves watching sirius talk. even if he’s not wearing his hearing aids, he’ll just sit there and watch sirius’ mouth move because it’s expressive and dramatic and so him.

sirius kisses remus to get his attention instead of tapping him sometimes :,)

Sirius hated learning new languages. Whenever the Black family visited a new place, Walburga expected him to have learned the national language perfectly before getting there. She said there was no way she’d let the family be ridiculed just because of his ‘lingual shortcomings.’

So when Sirius meets a lanky but unfairly adorable looking blonde, who didn’t so much as acknowledge him until two weeks later when Sirius learned he was deaf— it was safe to say he was intrigued.

For the first time in a long time, Sirius genuinely wanted to learn a language— BSL. Not for his mother or even himself, but just to understand the boy better whenever he passionately talked with his hands.

And when Sirius finally manages to sign a perfect sentence to the boy and saw the way his eyes sparkle whenever Sirius signed— Sirius thinks to himself, yeah. this is worth it.

Everyone have a good week? I sadly contracted covid for the first time so between the wonderful fatigue I have going on, i maaged to write and read a fair but, between the whole sleeping unintentionally thing.

So, i managed 11,629 words this weeks and finished off 5 fics, not to bad, but most are pretty short little fics so there is that.

“What are they going on about?” Lily leans in to ask James from where they’re all sitting at the Gryffindor dining table.

“Um…” Says James, having checked out of the flurry of hands a while ago. He looked back over to his left to see Remus and Sirius still having a heated discussion. There was a lot of angry faces, aggressive signing, and a few obscene gestures that you didn’t need a textbook to understand. With catching only a few of their all too rapid signs, James turns to Lily and says, “You don’t want to know.”

Lily passed James an odd look but ultimately dropped the topic. After a few moments she chanced a glance past James’ body, watching as Remus gawked a mocking expression at Sirius, slowly and tauntingly removing his hearing aids, working up Sirius’ already non-existent temper. She continued watching as Sirius’ face scrunched in fury, his hands coming up to sign slowly and clearly, “fuck you.” While Lily had a hard time keeping up with casual conversation in BSL, she had no trouble understanding that.

Unfazed with Sirius’ typical display of attitude, Remus just grinned at the curse and closed his eyes, the smugness evident by his mouth tugging up in the corner. Lily watched, only in mild horror, as Sirius reached across the table and grabbed the very face that wore that teasing grin.

Sirius grabbed Remus’ cheeks with his right palm over his mouth, using his pointer and middle finger to drag his bottom lids down and forcing his eyes to fall open. He used his left to sign something, sloppy yet swift with the comfortability of someone who’d been signing for years, and before Lily could even begin to decipher what was said, Sirius was storming away from the table with his robes flying behind him.

James looked over and fixed Remus with a look of disbelief, having a look of apology sent his way in turn. ‘Sorry you had to hear that,’ he seemed to say with his eyes. James just sighed and waved Remus off with the flick of his wrist, and then it was Remus’ turn to push away from his seat and scurry out the door.

Lily, looking equally unamused and impressed asked James, “What the hell was that?”

“A fight that translates to a night of silencing charms for Pete and I,” James explained before stuffing his mouth with more pancake.
