it is truly so wild how obsessed spn is with establishing the idea that anytime sam stands up for himself, in literally any way, it ends badly. finally pushing back against your 9th grade bully? he kills himself because of the one thing you said in your defense. you go to college because hunting is slowly killing you? your family disowns you. not wanting to work with your brother after he locks you up for a detox that's basically torture and treats you like a monster for a whole season? you start the apocalypse. your soulless self tries to save his life? your basically-father won’t look at you the same anymore. you tell your brother that you're upset he lied to you and that wouldn't save his life through the usage of your worst fear? he holds it over you for a whole season and it's some of the last words he says to you before he dies. truly you must just sit and take it.

it’s interesting to me that dean is perceived as the homemaker and sam’s caretaker (usually in a very stereotypical motherly manner) and headcanoning him as a women is not seen as misogynistic, yet other sam fans and i have been called misogynistic for recognizing that the way sam is treated by the narrative and the fans reflects a broader sense of how women are treated in media. viewing womanhood as a set of traits and refusing to believe otherwise is the actual misogyny taking place.

s10 of supernatural has dean under the influence of something that is specifically described as just ‘making you more of what you already are’, and sam makes allowances and excuses for him again and again. he almost kills sam & sam forgives him immediately pretty much while he’s doing it. he puts it down to it being the mark, not dean. it’s not who you are, it’s just this thing that was done to you! (nevermind dean actually ASKED for the thing) ‘you will never hear me say that you, the real you, is anything but good.’

meanwhile, s4 of supernatural has sam “disobeying” dean via drinking demon blood, using his powers and lying to him about it (bc dean has already shown to be awful about it, literally hitting sam to the point of splitting his lip for using his powers/not telling dean which is the real thing deans mad about), which as far as dean & sam know isn’t causing anymore destruction than their normal activities and is actually saving more people - and dean goes ballistic, locks sam underground, tells him he’s a monster and he’d want to hunt him, and that it isn’t even about what he’s doing, it’s who he is. it’s not this thing you’re doing that i disagree with, it’s YOU, you’re fundamentally wrong and evil. ‘because it’s not something you’re doing, it’s who you are. it means you’re a monster.’

and there are still so many people who think sam and dean are equally culpable in their toxic dynamic. that they treat each other in similar ways. lol. lmao even

and just because he killed ONEEEEEEEE misogynistic asshole means literally nothing in terms of him supporting women… in fact the show QUITE LITERALLY points this out in ANOTHER EPISODE! in the FIRST episode of s10, there’s a moment when a bartender(?)’s boyfriend starts being rough with her and dean beats his ass for it (way more than he needed to.) then later on in the ep, the show, through this girl, makes the point that this fight was never ABOUT dean helping her out, it was about dean having issues that run deeper and SEEKING OUT opportunities to incite violence. and WHEN this girl calls dean out on this HE LITERALLY CALLS HER A SKANK!!!!!!!

and then…. “he was under the influence (of the mark of cain) so the joke is on you” WHAT?????? do you HEAR YOURSELF. you sound like every person who has ever defended abusive misogynistic assholes simply bc they were drunk so they ‘didn’t mean it 😢’ FUCK YOUUUUUUUUYYYYYYUUYYY!!!!!!!!!!! you do realize that it doesn’t matter even if he meant it or not because harm was still done…..

HES A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. EVERYTHING HE DOES IS “JUST THE WRITERS” INCLUDING WHATEVER ‘feminist’ (if you can even call it that) decisions he makes….. its NOT just the writing of early seasons because again, here he is in season 10 being misogynistic. dpmo. and listen i have nothing wrong with “reclaiming” characters and making them into ur own but when ur talking about CANON MATERIAL. you cannot be writing this shit off as “just the writers” because that defeats the whole PURPOSE bro.

also like dean being protective of claire while nice isn't huge evidence that he's not a creep to young women 💗 so many creepy men will be protective of the women in their lives that they think of as family because they "know how men are" 😚
