s10 but everyone is as hard on dean for taking the mark of cain (which he was aware he was doing) as they were on sam in s5 for breaking the last seal (which he was not aware he was doing)

#that deans personal turmoil and desire to hunt and kill something envokes him working with crowley (especially bc he hadnt#properly communicated/apologized to sam and instead was pitying himself) to lead him to pursue the mark and accept it even with warnings#without properly questioning it vs sam who was attempting to save the world with the pressure of peoples lives and his responsibility to#this apocalypse and proving that choices can overcome bad circumstances outside of our control#and sam working w ruby who not only spent all of s3 establishing herself as worthy of trust to returning to sams side at his most#vulnerable to groom him (and even then .. sams actions and self restraint and compassion are present the entire time)#which also. rambling a bit sorry. but the final seal (a cruel and vicious demon who killed sams brother) gets the most credit for the#horrific outcome when.. the first seal is essential to even reach the last seal. and that never gets established as the same weight/guilt#dean choosing power to commit more violence and sam using his own powers (manipulated by someone he thought he could trust#to try to prevent disaster#also the heavy handed emphasis on sams guilt for the final seal when it was also revealed the angels were helping orchestrate other seals#to be broken meaning this was a large scale manipulation from both angels and demons#and not just sams personal failing but that gets overshadowed by scapegoating sam#while we spend a Huge portion of mark of cain with a sympathetic narrative to deans victimhood despite the active damage he is causing (ans#not to prevent the apocalypse .. just bc he cant resist the urge for violence)
