“Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia” Coming to AXS Aug. 19

AXS TV will present the broadcast premiere of “Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia” on Saturday.

Featuring 150 minutes of highlights from the May 14, 2015, all-star tribute to the late Grateful Dead guitarist, the program is part of AXS’ month-long Summer of Love celebration.

In addition to living Dead men Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann - who did not play together - the film features performances from Garcia’s peers (David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, Los Lobos) and acolytes (Yonder Mountain String Band, Widespread Panic, moe.). Others - including Allen Toussaint with “Get Out My Life Woman” and Jimmy Cliff on “The Harder they Come” -perform original tunes the Jerry Garcia Band regularly covered.

A short trailer (above) shows snippets of these performances and others to rev up excitement for the broadcast.

An LP and DVD of the concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion were released in 2016. “Dear Jerry” airs at 9 p.m. Eastern Aug. 19.

Navigating The World of Exhibition Design, One Power Tool At a Time: Andrea Alarcon

Working on the installation for the Dear Jerry exhibit was an incredibly fun and rewarding first experience of my time here at the MAH. Installing an exhibit never comes without its challenges but the end result is always worth it. Handling more of the hardware aspects of building pieces for the exhibit and using tools that I was not traditionally accustomed to using proved quite the challenge, yet even with the trickiness of learning to keep pieces level and wield power tools, it was a rewarding experience to look back at something that you physically helped put together.

Pictured above are a select number of fan decorated envelopes from a collection of over 1000 decorated envelopes from the UCSC Grateful Dead archives.

I became an expert at hanging things up evenly and level when setting up the 'Make Your Own Album Cover' activity, an activity where museum goers were given the chance to draw out their own personal album cover based on a specific emotion. I also worked on the cases for the fan made envelopes with our Chief Preparator Robbie and fellow intern Ellyn. It was an absolute blast to be a part of making Dear Jerry come to life!
