The Storytelling Method by Teresa L. DeCicco (2007)

I’d like to share something I’ve learned in my Sleep and Dream Psychology class. We have to keep dream diaries for this class, and sometimes we do some exercises with the dreams we write down. This is one of them. The exert is from a research paper, I’ll put the source below. Personally, I think this is an interesting way to look at your dreams which may provide some deeper insight, as this could shed some light on details that seemed insignificant before. Have fun!

1. The first step in this process is to have the participant write down the dream in as much detail as possible. The participant is encouraged to do so on waking. The dream should be written in the order in which it is remembered in consecutive sentences (e.g., I saw my mother in a red dress. She was picking flowers in a park. She was thinking about moving. I was afraid she would leave. The flowers were yellow).

2. The participant then underlines the most salient or important word, symbol, or phrase in each sentence (e.g., I saw my mother in a red dress).*

3. The participant then makes a list of the underlined words, for example,

red dress picking thinking leave flowers

4. The participant then makes an association with each word or phrase and writes these down in a new list, for example,

dream word   association red dress       hot picking           finding thinking          worry leave              comfort flowers           home

5. The participant then takes the new list of associations and makes a meaningful story from these words. The words must be kept in the order in which they appear from top to bottom of the list. For example, from the words in Item 4 above, a meaningful story might be “I am feeling hot and always finding something to worry about. I find comfort in my home.”

6. The final step is for the participant to bridge the story to his or her waking life. He or she asks him- or herself whether this story relates to a current waking situation. If it does, then this has provided meaningful insight into a relevant waking situation. The participant is instructed to write about (journal) the current situation given the insight from the dream.
