Deduebert supremacy

Boy I just get brain worms when I let myself think about them too long. The issues they have to overcome. The tension of having the same goals but contrasting methods. The events that have to take place for them to even be on the same side in canon.

Every time I re-read this prompt I filled ages ago, it just brings me back to the whole fic I had to come up with to take place BEFORE to story to justify how these two ended up were we find them. And then I keep going and now I have a whole plotline in my head with no time to write it out. It just RATTLES AROUND in there.

There’s a handful of really good fics out there but... want more...

Deduebert but it's Hubert's ghost being chained to Dedue after the latter kills him

SO F I N E let’s imagine, for a moment, that after Dedue kills Hubert, Hubert is forcibly tethered to Dedue after his death

Let’s imagine how at first Hubert would think it some divine joke, the goddess deciding to mock him further in his failures by letting him be so close, yet so far from the one person he’d considered abandoning everything for. 

Let’s imagine as the days, weeks, months pass, Hubert seeing Dedue continuing to be wracked with guilt for being the one to kill him, despite there being no other option thanks to Hubert’s damned stubbornness.

Let’s imagine Hubert himself growing increasingly upset and even sorrowful seeing Dedue still guilt-ridden over his death, berating himself for not taking Dedue’s hand when it was offered to him so long ago. 

Let’s imagine as time goes on, Hubert begins thinking of his situation as less of some sick joke by the goddess, and more of a punishment - one he wished Dedue wasn’t a part of. 

Let’s imagine that sometimes, when Dedue sleeps, Hubert watches over him, even lies beside him if he can, for once wishing that he had been selfish.

Let’s imagine that Hubert hates himself for his decision to ignore Dedue’s hand in favor of trying to follow what he believed was his fate.

Let’s just imagine.

In other news, I guess I ship Deduebert because of that comic now and I keep thinking about the sloooooow building mutual respect and then one day they’re working and tired and took a coffee break and Dedue opens up a little and asks Hubert if he’s ever has Duscar coffee. It’s a little different from Fodlan coffee, a bit stronger and they have a different method of brewing and....well, it would be hard to come by these days, but they’ve been warming up to each other and Dedue likes talking about happy things from Duscar sometimes.

Hubert doesn’t say anything about it but he does some research and calls a favor or two with one of the merchants and a couple weeks later, someone has left a bag of fine Duscar coffee beans outside Dedue’s room. Hubert claims to know nothing about it but seems maybe a tiny bit flustered when Dedue mentions that the gift made him very happy.

Also, there’s a lot of coffee in this bag. It’s far too much to just keep to himself, so Dedue decides to cook a big delicious breakfast for the two of them to enjoy the coffee with. (It’s to thank Hubert for the coffee but he’s not going to say that because Hubert can’t admit that the coffee was from him after he already denied it without looking like a big awkward dork. Dedue is gonna let that one slide.)

Dedue specifically chooses a bunch of spicy and meat dishes since he’s learned that’s what Hubert likes, and at this point he knows that Hubert doesn’t give out compliments unless he really means it, and while Dedue knows perfectly well that he’s a great cook...it’s still nice to hear Hubert genuinely compliment the food.
