I think one of the most startling things about BC is the fact that he’s...a man.
He’s a living breathing man.
A man with faults. A man who experiences anger and sadness and loneliness and annoyance and impatience. A man who walks talks breaths eats. A man of flesh and blood.
It’s sometimes a startling thought, isn’t it?
This man...who uses the fame that comes attached to his immense talent to bring to light causes most of us would not be aware, to shed light on charities that have gone unnoticed by us, causes that have been brushed under the rug.
This man who is so talented that some of us forget that he’s an actor acting, pretending to be feeling the raw emotions of the Creature or Hamlet or Patrick or Chrissie or Sherlock. He’s convinced some of us that Richard III was handsome and sexy in his anger, that Doctor Strange isn’t a real doctor looking for redemption, that the word for Polar Bear in French isn’t le polar bear.
He’s so creative that we forget Smaug isn’t real, that he’s CGI. That the Grinch shares a voice with him and with Classified.
He swings from intensity that gave birth to Patrick in At Last with his shaking hands and tears streaming his eyes, fighting himself to showing up on red carpets looking like a supermodel to going on talk shows and giggling so hard you worry he hurt his tummy.
We forget he’s flesh and blood, that he’s just a man.
A man who deserves respect and privacy like every other flesh and blood man. A man who deserves the love of his family, a man who’s life we’re not entitled to, a man who is willing to share himself with the world even though he doesn’t really have to.
Benedict Cumberbatch blows me mind.
He always does, he always has, and he will always blow my mind, with his humility, humanity, and deep sense of honor and respect.
And I’ll always put him on a pedestal.
And know I’m doing it, that I’m holding him to an impossible standard, that I’m idolizing a man made of flesh and blood.
Because he’s Benedict Cumberbatch, and that’s all I ever need to explain about him.
