Book Review: Crucified Love, Bonaventure’s Mysticism of the Crucified Christ by Ilia Delio, OSF

Published by Franciscan Media, c1998 is a classic. It is truly a book that you could read again and again, going deeper and deeper into God’s love for your soul. It is a meaty book. Depending on your spiritual appetite, morsels to gorging, one will walk away with wonderment and much food for thought!

This book took me longer than I thought because I would read and reread passages, not only in a day but sometimes consecutive days as to meditate on the words. I would often take this to Adoration and after the first hour, pull this out and fall into another world of the great saints and writers such as Bonaventure, Clare, Francis of Assisi, John Duns Scotus amoung others. It left me in such awe of our Lord, such a yearning and longing. I usually hate dog earring books but for this, it was a necessity done with love!  I know that I will need to return again and again these passages as spiritual food, balm for a bruised soul but mainly to remind me when it gets dark, of our relationship to God.

I won’t go into it too deeply because there is so much! End notes, Appendix, select bibliography are all things I usually gloss over but not in this book as they are a treasure trove. If you have the inclination to dive deeper, I would highly recommend this book.  If you want to maybe just dip in a toe by all means! it is do-able but be warned, once you dip in, you will want more. This is definitely a book that one would want for their personal library.
