5 tracks I didn't know last week, vol. 6
It's been months since my last "5 tracks I didn't know last week" post. In the meantime, I've been travelling quite a bit, digging left right and center, meeting people who turned me on to some great music and the result is that I've heard hundreds of amazing tracks, from dancefloor material to more relaxed tunes.
So, here's a completely arbitrary selection of five tracks that have recently showed up on my radar.
1. Delkom - Tanzen Ist Schön - Delkom Club Control - 1990
A project by Gabi Delgado of D.A.F and Saba Komossa. I love them so much, I might even write a post just about Futur Ultra which is probably one of the most underrated dance albums from the late eighties. The main reason why I'm so into them is that their sound is a hybrid of various dance genres, yet truly unique. In brilliant way they blend latino and germanic vibes to create a sound of their own, neither straight up House nor proper New Beat. 25 years later this still sounds fresh and one-of-a-kind, this track is the perfect example. It clocks at a very sexy 108 BPM but works well closer to 120 BPM too.
2. Twice of Love - The Birth - Who's That Beat? - 1989
B-side of a rare and expensive belgian New Beat 12". What a timeless track, while you sometimes get some dated gimmicks in New Beat, with its lascivious groove and twisted vibe, this is truly a timeless track.
3. Mystic Rythem - Sha-Dop - Peacefrog - 1995
Found out about this one on Rawhaus, a tumblr specialized in killer 90's house. A jittery, almost nervous Chicago stomper with an awesome rhythm section keeps things simple yet irresistible.
4. Nightmares On Wax - A Case Of Funk - Warp - 1991
Slowly but surely making my way through their catalogue and discovering some gems along the way. This track from 1991 sounds pretty garage but there's also a nice latent Baltimore vibe and that driving bassline simply can't be fucked with. However, there's something slightly off with the mix, seems like there's some clipping going on. It isn't Youtube's fault for once, I think that's just how the track sounds. Proof that you don't need pristine sound quality to get in the zone.
5. Velodrome - Capataz - Animalized - 1988
Hooked to this EBM on Acid jam from Jordi Gruber & Krishna Goineau of Liaisons Dangereuses. Just love how dry, pounding and tense it all sounds. This goes straight in my "black eyeliner / muscle & hate" playlist.
6. D.A.F. - El Que (Jonathan Kusuma edit) - not on label - 2014
The original, from 1981, is one my favorite D.A.F. songs to play. This edit from last year by the super talented Jonathan Kusuma sees the Indonesian producer take it to the next level, making the track a bit more DJ friendly and adding some epilepsia inducing sounds to it.
