I think a lot about Casey Jones as a character.
He was created to 'out-crazy' Raphael, and to be a love interest for April because they didn't want to pair her with a turtle, since they were initially asexual.
Then 2012 came along and gave us Apriltello anyway. And it was toxic for a while.
But boy did we get Casey Jones being Casey Jones.
The point is that Raph and Casey were always going to be the Violence And Anarchy Twins.
Casey Jones was literally born screaming ACAB in the 1980s. He was determined to protect The Little Guy from predatory cops and authorities just as much as from predatory street criminals.
Mirage Casey was probably the original poster child for socialist anarchist anti-establisment memes. Which is why Bayverse making him a cop wanting to be a detective was so fascinating. Was he trying to tear the institution down from the inside? I like to pretend he was.
These are different times, after all. Sure, make April a teenager and link her romantically with a painfully awkward Donatello, that'll be fun for everyone, right?
I'm not really an Apriltello fan partly because I remember when that was forbidden according to canon. But canon also did things like set up Older Leonardo with Raven Shadowhart (they had sex!!) before killing her, but that also showed that the asexual Turtles still liked sex, so hey. But also I'm not a fan because I was initially horrified about how Ciro tried to write 2012 Donnie stalking April and April stringing him along. There have been so many fan essays and videos about that. I'm glad things worked out by the finale, but… well. I mean, the turtles in every version have always had tiny crushes on April, she's their first human friend, she's their link to the human world. But 2012 made it blatant and it just felt weird. I knew it could have gone so well. Eh. I don't harass the hardcore Apriltello lovers, it's not a bother, and they enjoy it. I will say though that many of them will breathe fire at anything hinting at the ship being negative. And I hate that. That's how you get antis. Yes, it's an Archer paraphrase. And I hope they grow up one day.
Also, this is why 2012 Fix It AU fics are my favorite. April and Donnie working things out and often doing poly with Casey, Mikey being poly with Renet and Shini while Shini is with Karai, etc. Because Michelangelo and Shinigami are drift compatible.
Anyway. Casey Fucking Jones. Ultimate Chaotic Neutral Dumbass whose favorite sport is violence. Which is why he's got every stick and blunt weapon in his ubiquitous golf bag.
Including a toaster to throw at people while shouting "Give me a toaster or give me death!" - which suddenly I'm seeing as a video game.
Check out what happened when I searched my own blog for Genderfluid Mikey!
Yes, I know, I'm only doing this for fun and getting a degree in neuropsychology would be like the DREAM and shit, but when else am I going
The turtles were raised without gender roles or sexual binary bias. Thus, it wasn’t until they befriended humans that they bothered looking
TFW you're writing fanfic AU stuff with canon characters that you made gray asexual, pansexual, demisexual, genderfluid, polyamorous, bisexu
While writing a fic, I keep misspelling Y’Gythgba’s name, especially since I’m switching between that and Mona Lisa for Reasons (Gaia calls
Shinigami and Karai are gay. Canon! In my personal headcanon Shini is pansexual and polyamorous and is drift compatible with Mikey, and he
Okay, which one of my fandom mutuals wrote in? Everyone here knows Mikey is pan.

Howdy Ninja Team,
I'm a longtime reader, started back before issue #30 and I've been enjoying the story ever since. In fact, I've been loving the recent additions the most. Mutant Town and its surrounding themes and minor characters have been a joy to watch, especially with so many characters like me being introduced! I'm a trans woman and while IDW TMNT has clearly always been queer friendly, Sophie's influence has clearly come to bear on the TMNT world in the form of new queer faces and a stellar romance between Jennika and Sheena. With all this new representation, I've been curious about the possibility of one of the Turtles I grew up with getting a boyfriend or being presented as LGBTQ in some way. I grew up watching the 2k3 show and I've been a fan of Mikey, Leo, Don, and Raph long before I got into this comic. Raphael has a good thing going with Alopex and I have no desire to split them up, but Donnie, Mikey, and Leo are still... free agents so to speak. So yeah. Thoughts on/any possibility of a pan Michelangelo, a gay Leonardo, or maybe even asexual Donatello? And perhaps a boyfriend in one of their futures?
Thanks for your time and thoughts, Lillian
Hey, Lillian! Sophie has talked about getting into the romantic life of the other Turtles, so I know it's something that's on her mind! As long as the relationship is established in a way that makes sense for where the characters are, anything is possible!

Dear TMNT Fandom: Okay, I know there are very few fellow Old Ones sticking around on Tumblr, but every time someone insists that the Mirage and 2003 Turtles couldn't be asexual or demisexual because they had flirtatious moments, or Mikey wore women's clothes, I want to cry.
I know asexuality wasn't well known and has been deeply discriminated against but doing it against fictional animal mutants seems unnecessary. I wish I could say "who cares" but that's dismissive of a lot of issues.
Asexuals can have romantic attraction, people, aspec folks can even want sex. Even fictional representations. Even humanoid animals with their own morals and psychological rules.
What part of "no feelings of sexual attraction" do folks not understand? What part of "back in the 90s the word asexual was used by the franchise creators even if they might have changed their minds by now" do folks not understand? What part of "the mutant turtles were the only ones of their kind, isolated and near extinct, and would rather stick together than go off with someone separately" was hard to understand? Unless it's a thing against me and my fandom experience over the years. Which just makes me paranoid, so I'll ignore it. I've lived through decades of discourse and trolling even when it's not trolling.
Again, it's 2021, and I haven't talked to Kevin since 2005, and maybe it's different. But my memories in general are foggy enough without being privately messaged with "actually you're totally wrong because Jhanna and Joi and Renet and also Mikey crossdressing"
And those memories are really damn clear for some reason.
*deep breaths* it's fine, I'm fine. Maybe I've been wrong since 1996. But if that's the case, so have a few dozen other fans from the original email list and Geocities webrings. Sure, that's possible.
It's mutant turtles, it's a parody of superheroes, there's been a dozen reboots, they're middle aged by now, why not.
I should just not respond anymore.
Imma go write my fanfics and calm my adolescent old fan self.

Me? Blatantly plugging my own Ninja Turtles fanfics about sexuality, neurodivergence, and physical disability that I still really really need to update? It's more likely than you'd think. (hahahaha help me)

…I didn’t understand a word of that… I’ll leave you to it
That's your choice! I do recommend looking up how the asexuality spectrum works.
The Ninja Turtles may be mutants and fantasy creatures that don't have to abide by human ethics, but they have always been a kind of metaphor for marginalized minority groups - including queer, POC, disabled, and neurodivergent especially ADHD and Autism. It's easy for fans to project our own characteristics. But their asexuality is canonical, which wasn't really well known in the 80s and 90s. The characters were seen having romantic attraction but not really sexual. In fact, the Mirage issue in which Michelangelo was coerced into breeding with an alien princess was the first, and since the volume was never finished, we don't know if the eggs are his.
Oh I almost forgot! The creation of Casey Jones was a response to the fan letters asking for April to hook up with one of the turtles.
Anyway, this is to help out an old friend who loves the turtles and who is learning about being gray asexual. I wrote this shortly after I came out as demi.
