Other Than The Cost, the thing i'm worried about most wrt the bone graft is that they want to draw some blood beforehand, which they'll mix with the graft, and they didn't SAY as much but i'm gonna guess this step will help my body accept the graft. apparently they don't HAVE to do this and it will in fact cost $300 more but as this is already very scary and very upsetting i deffos want to, like, reduce the possibility of complications. but the only problem is, given that i am always Incredibly Stressed when i have to give blood, i am HORRIBLE for getting drawn from; they almost always have to go in through my hand and it sounded like if they can't get an arm vein they won't do the draw. so i'm wondering how to like. increase my chances. make my veins more visible. i know hydrating helps, so should i step up from water to something with electrolytes, like gatorade? we all know just calming down isn't gonna be an option.
Because I am evidently a masochist, I am taking advantage of this little break in other bullshit appointments by...trying in earnest to finally get in to see a dentist. 😰
Given the fact that I know I have at least a couple of problems that need to get fixed after those years of uncontrolled blood sugar, and the whole "local anesthetics not working right" bendy person situation? It does seem better to go for a dental practice that WILL do sedation worst case, right from the get-go. Thankfully I did find one of those in town, with good reviews to boot--and a decent online booking system. Now I just need to make sure Mr. C is OK ferrying me there, and when might be workable. 🫤

Also, dental stuff really does seem to be expensive af here. Almost as bad as back in the US. But, that really can't be avoided if I want to keep my teeth--which I kinda do! Already ended up losing two molars in London, and one of my front teeth is having an obvious problem now. (Which is thankfully not visible unless I bare them at people like a disgruntled chimp. Admittedly tempting to do sometimes, but I do try to refrain.)
I have lost my retainer.
This would not be worthy of announcing to the internet except it's a permanent one. It was glued in there with whatever kind of... plastic? Cement? Concrete? that dentists use to attach wire to your mouth bones.
It also wouldn't be worthy of announcing to the internet if it was broken or removed but not lost, because this has surely happened to someone else before. In all of orthodonitic history, there has to be someone else who bit down on a recently-on-fire marshmallow and removed an extremely expensive wire, which had been sitting there for nearly two decades, from their face.
but. I. Don't. Know. Where. It. Went.
I didn't spit it out. I didn't bite down on it. It didn't stick up and poke me in the cheek. I didn't swallow it. I hope I didn't swallow it.
This is going to haunt me.
Sorry you’re still recovering from the wisdom teeth removal ☹️ can I ask how the experience was?
Honestly supper good,
For people who don’t wanna know the details this is the end for you, for people (like myself) who want to know the details (to be prepared for whatever could happen with their go under the cut
So I am a person who would rather know everything that could go wrong/right so I can be prepared.
My personal experience so fair has been fine, I’m 6 days post op(I do count the day of the surgery) I have bruising on the left side of my jaw and I’m only in pain when I don’t take meds(alternating every 2-3 hours starts with ibuprofen then the next time Tylenol and so on so forth, also I’ve just been using over the counter stuff, I was given a prescription for pharmacy grade Tylenol and I filled it just in case but I haven’t used it)
FULL DISCLOSURE: I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed, three of them were impacted and one was partially exposed. But all of them were coming in sideways essentially(pushing up against my other teeth)
I went under general anesthesia, because I knew that if I was awake, I would freak the fuck out. I honestly don’t know how long I was under for because they did the general anesthesia through an IV. I remember them putting the spacers in and then I don’t remember anything after that after the surgery.
I 10/10 recommend general anesthesia.(and no I didn’t keep my teeth.)
Apparently my mom said we sat there for 20 minutes so they made sure I was OK, I remember the nurse sitting me up and helping me out of the chair and that’s it. Apparently I went the wrong way twice when the nurse was helping bring me out to my mom’s car and then I remember my mom helping me out of the car when we got to her house because you have to be monitored for six hours after at the very least, if you get general anesthesia.
But my mom essentially brought me over to the recliner chair and I passed out. I went in at 9 AM and the next lucid thing that I actually remember happening was around 12:40PM
When I woke up, my mouth was super sore, but I wasn’t bleeding a whole lot. I wasn’t super swollen, I took three days off of work after, and I also put ice on the sides of my jaw for 20-30 minutes every other hour for the first two days (now I only do it if my jaw feels super sore)
Day of I had yogurt, noodles(that were cooked off), and mashed potato. I have been going crazy with what I can and can not eat(I’ve been craving pickles) but overall I’ve just been doing soft foods.
The second day I did yogurt, jello, and udon(big soft chewy noodles, cooled down)
Day three was also pasta and lightly grilled cheese sandwiches(which panned me so much because I like them crispy)
Day four I started doing soft normal foods, chicken tenders (being very careful about the breading), biscuits or scones for my EU babes(but nothing super dry and crumbly), and zippy poppers(if you have a Newts then you know but it’s kind of like a better deep fried mash potato ball)
Now I’m so sick of soft foods, I have started eating normal foods. I’ve had hot pockets, grilled cheese, BLT, fruit. But I am mindful I guess of how hard/crunchy/gritty/acidic/spicy some things are.
My jaw is so swollen on the right side, from the dental work. I thought I was doing really good, but it's just that pain meds are wonderfully effective. It's very nice to be able to easily tell when it's time to take more.
The swelling makes my jawline look more squared. My rounded face is very adorable. The squared jaw isn't dramatically horrible, but it's odd enough to feel a bit unsettling to see. Just in an uncanny valley sort of way.
It's tough to do 2-handed typing and usual computer use while trying to hold the ice pack in place. I keep imagining that old stereotypical image of a person with a toothache, having a bandage wrapped around their head-and-jaw. I may have to rig that up later.
In other news, I blocked someone that reblogged my chicken video. I threw his blog description into a translator and didn't feel comfortable with the anti-immigrant stance he took. Like, the rest of the blog was generic images, a couple pretty ladies, and the description just... why did he need to say that? Bad vibes; blocked. It could've been a language barrier thing, but I don't want my video on that blog if I have doubts.
If anyone remembers me freaking out about an acquaintance trying to heal her debilitating dental pain with clove oil, there is an update
Despite not knowing her well, I was absolutely up her ass about going to the dentist, and I don't think I can take full credit or anything, but about a week after our first convo about it, she had an appointment
She had a massive tooth infection and abscess. Needed a full root canal, draining, and course of antibiotics. Last I heard she was still recovering
I'm glad she's getting better now but it's so frustrating to think that she endured 3+ weeks of severe pain hoping it would just go away with clove oil and saltwater rinses
Pseudomedical bullshit makes me so mad and this is a tiny example of why
