Hi! I was just wondering, what your stance on scerek is? I'm genuinely curious, because I've your seen previous posts on my dash and for some reason I have always read them as you enjoying the scott/derek dynamic more then the stiles/derek dynamic, but you write fics where stiles is with derek? Yet you deem that ship problematic so it's all very confusing ahah

Hey there, I'm so sorry for taking to long to respond!

It's not necessarily that I prefer the Scott and Derek dynamic more, perse - it's that I'm frustrated at how often this awesome character dynamic is erased for the sake of putting another ship and another character on a pedestal.

I like Scerek - though ironically, my favorite version of these dynamic is when they're in a platonic and brotherly relationship, but I like them all ways. (Same goes for Sciles, actually - while I like them in a shippy manner, I prefer them as a Brotp.) Conversely, while I can enjoy it as a brotherly dynamic, my favorite way to enjoy Sterek is as a romantic and/or sexual relationship.

I don't think the ship itself is problematic. Definitely, I think Stiles and Derek hooking up early on in the show would've been kinda toxic, but in terms of compatibility, they go well together, and the kinds of men they were in the later seasons would've been great together. I really enjoyed their relationship in the show...

...which is why I was so confused that fandom rejected it.

Because I don't count "violence warped into belligerent sexual tension" as a shipping scene, so I saw very little Sterek in the first two seasons. Conversely, I saw a lot in 3 and 4. When I was watching it, it made sense to me that they would have such a huge fandom - so I was shocked when I got into fandom only to see that most fans rejected this relationship and this dynamic.

The ship itself isn't toxic, but the fandom surrounding it often is. We don't have to demonize or erase Scott in order to make Sterek possible - yet so many fans do, anyway. We don't have to erase Stiles' and Derek's canon personalities to make Sterek possible - yet so many people do. Stiles and Derek can date each other even though neither of them are the main character of the show or the leader/alpha, yet so many fanfics go through some pretty convoluted lengths to make Derek an alpha (as if Stiles would be shallow enough to only date alphas or something...?), and a lot of meta claims that Scott isn't the main character of his show or the hero of his story, and that Derek or Stiles is and Scott just "stole" it from them. We don't need to write Scott as a bad friend in order to make Stiles a good one, or vice-versa. Stiles doesn't have to choose between Scott and Derek, and never did.

Shipping in general is so often a culture built on hate, jealousy, and needless competition. Outside of fandom, this is most common in heternormative relationship middles. It's the excess of love triangles, it's the catty or stalking ex, it's the idea that you can only have one member of the opposite sex out of your family in your life, and everyone and anyone else is a threat. It's the idea of soulmates, a notion which sounds romantic but also enables emotional abuse (and other kinds of abuse).

This manifests in fandom, too. Take a look at Stydia and Stalia fandoms. One girl does not have to be an evil snake, a rapist, or a whore in order for Stiles to date the other one. Stiles can date Malia while both of them are friends with Lydia, and he can date Lydia while both of them are friends with Malia. Yet both fandoms are as much about hating on the "other" girl as enjoying the relationship itself, and even though I love both those ships, I can barely follow any blogs for either of them - or any blogs dedicated to Malia and Lydia - because inevitably, there's misogyny against the 'other' girl.

This mentality manifests in the Sterek fandom, too, just not in a purely ship-to-ship competition. There's this weird idea in fandom that if you like Scott, you have to hate Derek, and if you like Derek, you have to hate Scott. There's this weird idea that only one of them can be the hero, instead of both of them. There's this very toxic idea in fandom that in order for one of them to be good, the other person has to be evil.

This is frustrating because one of the cores of the show has been about them together. Their growth has been in tandem from the beginning of the show to Derek's last appearance. They have been at odds with each other many times - but they've agreed far more often, they've worked together far more often, and they've had each other's backs throughout most of the show. They were both scared teenagers thrown into shitty situation after shitty situations, and they've both been through hell - and came out stronger for it on the other side. They have learned from each other tremendously, they look up to each other. Derek is one of Scott's biggest supporters as a True Alpha, and when Scott struggles with his new status, he goes to and confides in Derek. They both worked hard to save Stiles when he was possessed by the nogitsune. When Derek was kidnapped, the entire pack was in Mexico looking for him. Scott literally let Araya torture him so he could find Derek.

I like Scerek and Sciles as brotps and Sterek as an otp, and I hate that so much of fandom seems to set out to make this impossible. I hate that so much of the Sterek fandom relies on erasing Scott when it's unnecessary, and that Scott's relationships with Stiles and Derek is erased, as if somehow that's the only way for Stiles and Derek to have a relationship with each other.

As a brotp, I love Scerek, and that's why I hate how much of fandom wipes it out.

After many promises and a lot of frustration, I have finally published the demo for my Teen Wolf game, Love Potion #24.

I’d appreciate any constructive feedback if you do check it out. It’s still a rough draft, and I’ve played this game dozens of times so there’s probably some stuff a new player could point out to me that I missed. I’m still not set on all of the artwork the way it is, either. I will almost certainly change the start screen before I publish the game again, but what can you do. More importantly:

CALLING ALL TEEN WOLF WRITERS

Some awesome friends of mine have already offered to help me with writing the dialogue for the rest of the game and I love them for it, but I’m still looking for more writers if anyone is interested! The more the merrier! I can never have too many people helping me out. And it’s not just Sterek scenes - depending on the player’s choices, there will be an ending for basically every Stiles ship. So I need Stydia, Stalia and Sciles writers, as well as Stoyd, Sterica - basically every pairing you can think of involving Stiles! I’m not the best at writing romance scenes, so I’d appreciate all the help I can get!!!

@derekhles: I haven't used weheartit in so long, but I'm pretty sure it is lol. It has boards of collection made by others for inspiration and such! And I tend to have a much more easier time finding an image. Like on the main search page just write in something like 'yellow aesthetic' and it comes up with a huge range of aesthetic pieces
