The story is this...
King William and Queen Selene are expecting a baby, when Selene contracts a terrible illness. The only known cure is a rare magical herb called Pietro Parsley. And the only known place where it grows is the garden of Zelda the sorcerous, who uses the leaves for her youth potions. King William sends her all kinds of gifts, and goes three times to beg her personally. But Zelda, bitter and vengeful from so many years alone denies him three times. So out of desperation, he and his soldiers sneak into her garden and steal the plant. The entre herb is ground into a broth and used to heal the Queen, who then gives birth to baby Odette. Then Zelda, in her anger, steals Odette, taking her far far into the hidden depths of a canyon.
Zelda surprisingly takes to motherhood, loving Odette as her own child and teaching her how to heal with her magic hair. When Odette is five, she gets in a terrible accident, damaging her legs and it's discovered that she can't use her healing powers on herself. That's when Zelda moves her into a camouflaged tower with only a puffin bird for company. Thirteen years later, Derick the explorer and his horse Samson come across the tower by chance. He sees Zelda go in and out and sees Odette at the window. She sees him too and is scared at first. He manages to send her letters through floating lanterns, and she eventually lets him climb her hair.
They bond over a series of meetings. He tells her about his travels and his friends and brings her presents from the outside world. She shows him her wheelchair, her cooking, her healing skills, and after talking it over, gives him her virginity. Meanwhile, mischief makers Edgar and Ellen try to steal from Zelda, who blackmails them into watching Odette while she's away. They see Derick leaving the tower, and tell Zelda all about it. Zelda confronts Odette right as she experiences her first morning sickness. Zelda realizes her 'baby girl' is pregnant and demands to know if Derick forced himself on her. Odette maintains that it was consensual, and that just makes Zelda angrier. She cuts Odettes' hair and magics her away to another location (Swan Lake). Then she sets a trap for Derick, attacking him and damaging his eyes.
Derick blindly wanders the wilderness with the help of Samson, until he stumbles upon a pub owned by a good witch and frequented by Knight School drop-outs. Mama Odie tends to him and he tells her about his missing lover and her 'demented witchy mother' and Mama Odie along with everyone who was eavesdropping on them, realizes he's talking about Zelda. They contact King William, saying they have a lead on his daughter. Odette meanwhile has to adjust to being pregnant, and disabled, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by ruins. She and Puffin get by on what they can find. unknowingly still being watched by the twins. Derick, helped by his motley group of new friends, search for her. Eventually, Samson and Puffin run into each other, and they lead the others to Odettes' camp. They arrive just in time for Odie to help deliver twin babies. And Dericks' eyes heal just in time to see his wife, son, and daughter. Zelda, watching from a distance, sees how happy Odette is, and gives up her claim on her. She and the twins leave to start their own family.
