Derrick Davis (with Kaitlyn Davis)
In celebration of @from-aldebaran's first night as official stream host, please have this art of Derrick Davis and Kaitlyn Davis!
picking-the-ghost-in-man-or-bear stream notes
@almostemilyy: Lily is one of the most Christine-looking-Christines I've ever seen. It must be the Fr*nch in her @Luukfy: lol the sensoring of the French @funeral_lilies: cw: Fr*nce @Zhenyus: almostemily why did you censor frnch oh wait frnch oh it does it automatically
happy birthday ari!
@almostemily: "family friendly" three minutes before someone mentions hands
'DO NOT POST THIS RECORDING ON YOUTUBE, TUMBLR, OR ANY OTHER SITES'
The way they played it made me root for Raoul more, and I don't like that
@paper_faces: yo when are we gonna get a real auctioneer in this part @faceofbeast: if we got a real auctioneer for this, the overture would be 10 seconds long
@warpweight: head prop made fresh each show from whoever's phone rang in the last performance audience
@beyond-this-illusion: Brunette Carlotta
@GlassPrism said the ballet dancers are supposed to be Carthaginian slaves, as 'Carthage was fighting against Rome'
@GlassPrism: And Hannibal and Elissa/Dido were generals/rulers of Carthage <> Hannibal is a historical figure, Elissa/Dido is more of a legendary one @heyitszev: So they're Carthage slaves and not roman slaves taken from war @GlassPrism: They're a 1980s conception of an 1800s conception of Carthaginian slaves, yes lol
@haunted-hideaway: This staging... like did they have a vision? I think it needed its own costumes. @GlassPrism: They had a vision and its vision was "different from Hal Prince because royalties" lol @GlassPrism: More seriously, I do think they had a vision of making it more down to earth and grounded, because that was in vogue in the early 2010s @GlassPrism: But I do think it clashes with ALW's music, which is very romantic, and the general plot which is high melodrama and gothic romance
@motelpearl: i feel like nonreplica costumes usually look like halloween costumed @GlassPrism: Yeah you can't really do "down to earth gothic romance" very well lol @probablynotben: IIRC they were originally going to have new costumes from a different designer, but they must've realized they had so many of the originals that it'd be cheaper to recycle (and cut corners)
Phumzile Sojola plays Piangi, Trista Moldovan plays Carlotta
@ravens-repine: Panic! at the Opera
@beyond-this-illusion: The tour only started after the 25th at RAH, right? @britishchick09: yeah illusion it started in 2013! :D @GlassPrism: @beyond-this-illusion Also to be more specific, the restaged UK tour started in 2012 and the restaged US tour after that (used the same sets, costumes, etc.)
@poorerik: i love the look she shoots meg like “why are you doing this to me.” @heyitszev: and then meg will one day shoot back <3
@from-aldebaran: No scarf to save space on the restaged tour truck. Many such impactful choices.
@spookytimediaries: huh i thought they got rid of the character of the phantom in the restaged @spookytimediaries: 'Some Guy in the Walls of the Opera' doesnt quite have the same ring to it
@poorerik: meg and christine are both giving. short
I remember seeing that post on tumblr recently about how it's a nice detail in some restaged productions where Raoul barges into Christine's changing room to show how inappropriate it actually is; now mme Giri conveniently leaves the door open when she exits just before Raoul enters
@wheel-of-fish: I sure hope he moves the candelabra many times
@paper-faces: thats what i did when i was trying to choreograph when i was 14 -- the song says fall so we fall now
@marumotto: singing while carrying her
@warpweight: he is holding her like she is 1 piece of popcorn
@funeral-lilies: TUCK HER IN KING
@haunted-hideaway: I hate the bed so much but I'd be totally OK if he had a coffin he put her in. @kyannnite: what if we had sexual tension on my dead moms bed moment
@funeral_lilies: shirtsleeves??? SLUT @funeral_lilies: ROLLING THEM UP?? @haunted-hideaway: lilies… HE"S PRACTICALLY NAKED
self unmasking :/
the whole chat campaigning for him to crawl, and then he slowly descends and FAlls on his knees. God. Oh he first shies away from her when she gives back the mask. damn
@funeral_lilies: im not even that into men's legs like that but oh my god
excellent pic from @glassprism:
The managers' Red Room. Like an old friend
@Zhenyus: this office is giving masquerade bathroom.... @almostemily2: my room when i open up masqueradenyc.com
@funeral_lilies: the best thing abt florida water is that it could actually be period accurate it's been around since 1808 lmao
@paper-faces's pervert's mist meme
and the worst person to play the phantom from @almostemilyy
@emotionalsicknessxx: we have mr tumnus at home (mr tumnus at home:)
@GlassPrism: It was the Phantom disguised as a stagehand [who hanged the balletdancer], which was foreshadowed in the part right after Think of Me
@warpweight: christine doign the "killing myself in front of you to forever change your bond and the trajectory of your lives" tweet to erik and raoul
@faceofbeast: oh ok no build up @paper_faces: no twirl? no tension?
@whatyouwill: you forgot to ask jesus
@whatyouwill: in the 1880s [fedoras] were a women's hat
@heyitszev: mme giry, sighing and lighting a cigarette
@lonranch: christine is the type to order a grow ur own mushroom kit and shes like tries to microdose them but she has no idea how to determine dosage so she just shows up to things half way through starts tripping out and irish goodbyes
@almostemilyy: like this is an emmaculate wishing gown @faceofbeast: wishing gown plaid???? i love??
@whatyouwill: bustle size to codpiece size correlation
@beyond-this-illusion: Idk if we've mentioned this with the restaged before, but is this meant to be more 1890s to fit the LND timeline?
Everyone cheering and rewinding when this Raoul got slapped
@almostemilyy: instead of man or bear it's man or ghost and i'm picking the ghost
@faceofbeast: ALW trying to gaslight us in this Tour to hate Raoul but we just hating on this actor so it's method,,audiencing
@or-what-you-will: I wrote a fic where raoul invents the phantom to gaslight christine [it's Poor Raoul!] [sorry i mistyped during the stream, I know it's you will!]
The restages piano by @beyond-this-illusion:
@beyond-this-illusion: I want to say the regular tomb has 1870 on it if I remember from last week? Like, 11 years without him vs 3 years is a major difference in how a Christine actress can approach this. [ambiguous Gustave Daae death dates]
it's far-reaching, folks
@nokturnal-me: Why they acting like waffle house
@les-gnossiennes-fantomatiques: i love the whole "you cant win her love by making her your prisoner" line bc it really is the best/worst thing you could tell this man; just like a big brained game of truth or dare to him
@almostemily2: leaving my door unlocked and a plate of cookies in the hopes that santa erik visits me
the PONR blocking....
the final lair blocking.........the bed..............
[04:15:28] warpweight: it's like he's evil cartoon villain ties damsel to traintracks horny but also keeps forgetting about that throbbing boner to claw at his Posts which she Cruelly Threw To The Floor
@GlassPrism's posts on how the 25th anniversary concert influenced the restaging, and how the 2004 movie influenced the restaging
Derreck when she kissed him! God! It was worth watching just for that
no ring return :((
I'm clearing old notes off my phone so please enjoy some modern Phantoms based on actor portrayal vibes and inside jokes.
Derrick Davis - the type of person who would bring you flowers at work if you had a bad day. (They might have come from the gas station across the street, but it's the thought that counts.)
Saulo Vasconcelos - the type of person to bring mini muffins to the neighbourhood bake sale.
Jeremy Stolle - the type of person who would wear open toe sandals with calf high white socks to church.
Cooper Grodin - the type of person who would charge you a gym membership and make you hire him as a personal trainer at a gym he built in his garage using secondhand equipment from the 70s. [This version is based on his restaged take on the character, not the Masquerade version.]
Franc D'Ambrosio - the type of person who would sing "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" unironically. [Look, when you've heard him sing "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" you just know.]
Thiago Arancam - the type of person who would start a farm and grow nothing but beets, just because he heard that beets can be used in place of road salt.
Paul Schaefer - the type of person who shops for wallpaper.
Uwe Kroger - the type of person who would buy up a bunch of cemetery plots and then sell them to you in threes and above retail value. [This one wasn't on my phone, I made it up just now.]
THE SECRET GARDEN - February 19 – March 26, 2023, Ahmanson Theatre.
Derrick Davis is the type of person who would bring you flowers at work if you had a bad day.
I can see that for him, he seems like such a sweetie.
In the interests of saving my blog from lots of little ask responses, I’m going to answer your other two asks here too!
Saulo Vasconcelos is the type of person to bring mini muffins to the neighborhood bake sale
You know. That sounds right. He’s a gentle giant, that man.
Cooper Grodin is the type of person who would charge you a gym membership and make you hire him as a personal trainer at a gym he built in his garage using secondhand equipment from the 70s.
Yep. Sleazy.
Thank you for streaming Derrick! If the restaged tour was supposed to humanize the phantom, he understood the assignment. He truly is an excellent actor and it was a delight to get to see a video of him. Would you happen to know if there are any other videos of him, even if they are non-phantom ones?
I'm not sure whether you mean videos in general or like, full performances. If it's the former, you can totally go down a YouTube rabbit hole with him. (Looks like this one of him singing "Music of the Night" is a great place to start, and here's a clip of him talking about the restaged tour.) I don't know of any other bootlegs, though.
Top 10 favorite Phantoms.
