Focus Map: The Broken Sands Desert
Ishtari Trade Posts: The nomadic Ishtari people follow a fairly consistent schedule that moves with the cycle of the moon and the desert storms. Those who wish to do business and trade with the Ishtari often need to catch them at their trade outpost either inland or on the coast during the winter or summer. For one month in each of these seasons, the trade posts become a marketing hub for the trade of simple relics and ancient items.
The Lost Tomb: The forgotten resting place of a Mummy Lord who commands powerful magic. It is thought that it was his fell power that turned the once gleaming civilization of Northeastern Talamh into a barren desert many years ago during the war of the sundering. A DM can use this to work in any number of pre-made settings that involve ancient tombs, such as tomb of annihilation if they care to, or perhaps they wish to re-awaken the Wrath of the Mummy Lord, now itching to exert his power over what he views as his own realm.
The Maw of Indrik-Yan: The Ishtari avoid this fell pit as much as possible. Not a part of the sundering, but rather the sight of a great battle during the age of heroes in which a few powerful mages sealed away a demonic war lord who had possessed one of the Ishtari’s leaders, Indrik-Yan. In the end, Indrik Yan was turned into a massive sand worm by the demonic powers and wreaked havoc on his kin. Before he was sealed, his purple blood spread across the sand in the fit of battle, and gave birth to the first purple worms, which are still a scourge upon the desert today.
The Necropolis: The Ishtari are a people who love their land, the warm desert allowing them to thrive. When a tribal leader dies, they are ritually embalmed and placed within the necropolis, destined to watch over the Ishtari’s greatest relics for all time.
Oasis of Basque: The only oasis to which the Ishtari allow outsiders access. The Oasis of Basque has Ishtari who live and trade within its boundaries year round, but often for more artisan crafts rather than the relics of ancient civilizations.
Oasis of Prema: The Ishtari’s most valued oasis, it is here that the Ishtari rest before journeying into the ruins of Ilang, their most sacred site besides the necropolis. Treasure hunters have often searched for this oasis as a launching point to find the ruined city of Ilang and loot the rich magical artifacts that are supposedly within.
Oasis of Taika: The spring here is though to be magical, blessed by Taika himself to revitalize the Ishtari and give them their strength. In truth, it is simply the Ishtari’s most pure spring and their sight of prayer that Indrik-Yan shall never rise again. Treasure hunters often search for this sacred spring in the hopes that its waters are akin to the “fountain of youth”.
Ruins of Aravin: A long looted but still sacred city to the Ishtari. It’s coastal location means that it could not avoid the banditry and zealous looting of pirates and military ships throughout the years, but the Ishtari still guard it vigorously, leading many to wonder if there are still more treasures within to be found.
Ruins of Ilang: The only ruined city from a lost age of magic that has gone untouched by treasure hunters. Here the Ishtari give thanks to Prema and Keahi for the gifts they give each year to the Ishtari. It is also here that the Ishtari youth go through a coming of age, in which they journey down into the under ruins of Ilang in search of relics to trade or restore.
Ruins of Kytecin: Mostly destroyed by the ravaging of Indrik-Yan, Kytecin still holds importance to the Ishtari people, and they protect the crumbling ruins from those who would seek to steal the relics from within.
Notes from the Creator: The Ishtari people of the broken sands are a culture of nomads and traders. They worship the gods but Prema especially, and view the tokens and relics they find as gifts from her. Because these relics and ancient cities are sacred, the nomadic Ishtari collect them and restore them for prayer or use by their druids and warriors, while trading off the mostly worthless or irreparable to scholars and treasure hunters. Through trade and the hunting of the dangerous purple worm, the Ishtari thrive beneath the burning sun. They are a culture made up of every race, not one in specific, and there are those who will stay or leave the tribes of their own accord. The route shown on the map above is the main yearly travel route for the Ishtari, but sometimes smaller clusters of Ishtari will veer off to investigate new places within the desert, or even to specifically journey to the necropolis and lay their leaders to rest. This weeks posts aren’t done yet! Behind this is coming a brew post for the Ishtari’s specific brand of desert walker barbarians, and the Ishtari background for players! Thanks to Inkarnate for their map making software.
