On the topic of comparing and contrasting episodes, I did so for "Photo Op" and "Desserted" a bit ago. Here's what I had to say:

In "Photo Op" Bill leads his family to the photography studio under false pretenses that they're going to the food court. He justifies his lie with the fact that he just wanted to do something nice for his family.

In "Desserted", Cricket leads his family to a restaurant under false pretenses that he can pay for their meal. He also justifies his lie with the fact that he just wanted to do something nice for his family. In both situations, affording food is an issue.

I'm guessing it's unintentional on the writers' part, but it's interesting to think about an IC reasoning for this. It's almost as if Cricket internalized the lesson from his dad that "sometimes lying is okay if it's for a nice surprise", and also, internalized the fact that affording food is tough for his family (something that has probably been hammered into his head on multiple occasions)... But food is also something that brings them all a lot of joy. So it kinda makes sense that he'd think of treating his family to a meal as a great way to show his love for them after that, even if it was deceptive.

I also have to point out after making this connection that it's ironic that Bill is the only one to question the situation Cricket puts them in lol.
