Other US government agencies have had thousands of agents reassigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Brown-shirt masked agents patrol the streets. Sometimes they work with propaganda news outlets to stoke chaos and then film it.
On September 29th, hundreds of armed agents raided an entire apartment complex in Illinois, United States with riot trucks, helicopters, and smoke grenades. They restrained people with zip-ties, separated children from caregivers, and dragged some into rented vans and left others outside for hours. People who show up to legally mandated court appearances or check ins with ICE are being routinely arrested, detained, and deported. This tactic was reported yesterday by MSNBC as happening in New York, and by The San Francisco Chronicle as happening in California.
Conditions in detainment facilities are brutal. El País reported on cases of pregnant people detained by ICE who are inadequately fed, offered no interpretation or translation during medical consultations, subject to medical procedures without consent, and neglected following miscarriages.
On September 18, El País reported that hundreds of people detained in Florida have been disappeared. Miami Herald reports that 800 people are no longer in ICE's database, and their lawyers and families are unable to locate them. 450 more were still in the database, but with no location listed.
