The Kingkiller Chronicle Wiki is moving away from Wikia and needs your help!
The Kingkiller Chronicle Wiki needs your help!
For the last nine years the Kingkiller Chronicle Wiki, like hundreds of others, has called Wikia home. However, due to the recent uptick in take-over ads, auto-playing video and audio ads, and the super annoying "Congratulations iPhone/Android User!" ads that make browsing the wiki near impossible, I've made the decision to move the Kingkiller Chronicle Wiki to a new home.
Introducing the new Kingkiller Chronicle Wiki!
Now we're not going to just take the content and push it to the new wiki. While that would definitely be the easiest course of action I don't feel like it's the best for the Kingkiller community. When I started working on the Wikia version of the wiki I rambled. Like a lot. And it's quite obvious too. The content over there was poorly written, poorly laid out and just all over the place both in terms of detail and organization.
So a huge part of the process of moving the wiki over to its new home will be creating new content and rewriting old content. I’m currently working on adding as much content as I can but with the amount of material in the books, it’ll take me at least a year if I work alone.
If you’re interested in helping out you can do any of the following:
Send me your notes! I know lots of people take notes as they’re reading, whether these are just speculation about future events, observations about particular characters, or full-on character biographies, send them! Existing notes means that I won’t have to research every character as I go, I can just aggregate all the information you’ve come up with and go from there.
Send me chapter summaries! Yes! The new wiki will have actual chapter summaries. 🎉🎉🎉 These should just be short (soft limit of 500 words) descriptions of what happens in each chapter. Maybe talk about new characters or locations that have been introduced.
Compile a list of background characters. When I was first writing the Wikia version of the wiki, I didn’t focus on background characters. I was mainly focused on the major and minor characters that showed up multiple times.
Background characters (like Hesua) never got any recognition on the old wiki, but with the new wiki, every named character will have a page. Even unnamed characters will have their own page where possible.
Those of you who speak other languages can help out too! The Kingkiller books are available in a wide variety of languages and I hope that one day every language will have its own version of the wiki. There is a lot to do and it’ll be great if we can do it together.
Are there any benefits to using the new wiki?
YES! We are currently in the process of commissioning character portraits for as many characters as we can. The new wiki is the only place you’ll be able to find these commissions!
Will there be ads on the new wiki?
NO! It’ll be a very cold day in Hell before ads go up on the new site. We aren’t trying to make money here. At the moment the price of running the wiki is very low and is coming directly from my own pockets. If it eventually gets so high that I can’t comfortably afford it, then we’ll look at alternative ways of funding the site.
What software will the site run on?
The wiki will run on MediaWiki, the same software that powers Wikipedia. The old wiki ran on the same software, but an extremely old version, 1.19. The new wiki will run on the latest stable version available, 1.31.
Why can’t I create an account?
In an effort to prevent vandalism or spam, I’ve restricted account creation. Only administrators will be able to create new user accounts, so you’ll have to contact one to have an account created. (Currently, there’s only one administrator, me. So just let me know either here on Tumblr or Discord (my username is penguinstyles#9735) and I can make one for you.)
Will my old account work on the new wiki?
NO. This is because we are completely moving away from Wikia. You will have to contact an administrator to have a new account created.
Do I have to make an account to read the wiki?
NO. Anyone will be able to access the wiki. You’ll just need an account if you want to edit.
I’ve never edited on a wiki before. Can I still help out?
YES! We make use of a feature called VisualEditor this allows you to use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor to add and format content. This makes it incredibly easy for new users to contribute.
