Hi there, I’m so excited, I found a very cool lichen that I have never seen before. It’s really remarkable and I’m really hoping you might know something about it. I saw it on a walk today in the far North Woods of Maine, where things are just waking up. As you can see, the backdrop is this frosty mint with pink fairy globes. Anything you can tell me is much appreciated. Thank you so much for running one of my favorite blogs, cheers!

This is the one, the only, Dibaeis baeomyces, aka pink earth lichen, the lichen so bae it's in her name not once but twice! She grows on loose, disturbed, and acidic soils in upland areas, but can be easily overlooked or misidentified when sterile (isn't producing those pink, mushroom-looking fruiting bodies). She is probably in the top 10 cutest things on planet earth, in my not-so-humble opinion. A great find! Thank you for sharing, and I hope you keep looking for such precious babies in your area (you've got a lot of good ones, FYI).

FOTD #061 : pink earth lichen! (dibaeis baeomyces)

pink earth lichen is a fruticose lichen in the family icmadophilaceae. it occurs throughout eastern north america, often growing directly on unstable soils (e.g. loose sand / dry clay) & in full sun. it spreads quite quickly for a lichen !!

the big question : can i bite it?? like most lichens - this fungus is inedible</3

"d. baeomyces is characterized by bulbous pink apothecia, 1–4 mm in diameter, atop stalks no taller than 6 mm. the thallus may be grey or white, & may have a pinkish tinge."

Red River Gorge might as well be a lichen hot spot. I could spend hours in solitude marvelling at the amount of lichen diversity available to the every day hiker out for a jaunt through the plateaus and woods.

Pink Earth Lichen, Dibaeis baeomyces, is a fairly unmistakeable showy lichen that many of you have probably come across from time to time and wondered what it is. The base is a crustose matrix of Ascomycetes farming their cyanobacterium until individual mating types of the ascomycetes within the thallus mate and eventually form what is essentially the ascocarp. The pink bodied ascocarp is a combination of a stalk like ascophore and a bulbed out sac apothecia at it’s apex which is the spore producing body of the lichen. The reason why I said it’s fairly unmistakeable is because we have another look-a-like in the eastern half of North America that has a reduced stalk and a flattened head that shares very similar appearance, called Icmadophila ericetorum. The soil types I associate these with are usually a sandstone or acidic based shallow pine matt soil that has some ability to soak up water.
