Dimming Light - Chapter 2: In Hiding
(A/N: hope u guys have been doing well. Faith is not doing well XD)
Dante had to give it to the girl- she moved fast.
He prowled through most of Capulet City, shooing away the back alley rats that tried to nibble at his coat, but the smell died off. It was beginning to get dark by the time he made it back to the shop, and Lady gave him a call to inform him that she too lost track.
He sighed, collapsing into his chair and staring at the ceiling. His stomach grumbled.
Who the hell was she?
How the hell did a short stack, homeless girl with a surprisingly sweet scent just crush that demon? There was no way she was a demon herself; his instincts told him otherwise.
Was that thing even a demon in the first place...?"
He scratched his head, already feeling the massive headache that came with big thoughts like these. It was about time for pizza, anyway.
He snatched up the phone and ringed up the number, only to get the familiar beeping of a disconnected line.
Dante forgot to pay the phone bill. Again.
"Stupid clients not giving me my stupid money," the hunter grumbled as he shrugged on his coat, stepping back into the muggy night. "Fuckin' ridiculous; what's a guy supposed to live off of, rocks?"
He was so busy grumbling that he nearly missed the homeless girl picking through the trash bins in the back of the bakery.
He would've missed it if it weren't for the rolling pin smacking his head.
"Hey! Hey! Get out of my trash!" a voice shrieked.
Dante swore, whipping around to give the owner a piece of his mind, only to see the girl rushing to scoop up the stale loaves, terror in her eyes.
"Alright, sir, just take a breather!" he called out, strategically stepping in front of her and raised his hands dramatically. "It ain't that big a deal to let loose some stale crusts, yeah? Who's it gonna go to, the rats?"
"The rats have more use than that bitch! And who the hell are you, to get in my way?"
"Well, that's not very nice. C'mon, I'm sure you, the rats, and I have places to be." He stepped forward and made a grand show of searching through his jacket, Ebony and Ivory glinting in the light. "If it really bothers you that badly, I'm sure I can compensate-"
"It's fine," the owner rushed, sallow skin beaded with sweat. "Just keep her off my property!"
"Cool, cool. See ya then," he chuckled, and he turned to face the girl-
She was gone again.
But this time, the scent didn't die off quickly. She was still around. He set off, turning into the alleyway and following the sweet scent of lotuses until he reached the back of some building.
And there she was, huddled into a corner, tearing off chunks of the stale bread she had taken with a weak grimace.
"Yo," Dante called out, but took a step back when she flinched. "Hey, it's all good. I'm not here for the bread."
The girl sighed, still refusing to look at him. "There's nothing to take. You should leave; you're hungry." With a sigh, she tossed away the baguette. "It's all rotten."
"Oh... Sorry about that."
"It's fine." She leaned her head against the wall, eyes squeezed shut. Now that he could look closer at her, he could see the unnatural protrusion of her cheekbones.
He swallowed and looked away, the sight too painfully familiar to be seen.
At least the scraping of shoes on concrete and the hushed whisper of small voices distracted him from the sight, and he turned his head to see two kids peering around the corner, eyeing them.
"Oi, scram." He jerked a thumb back down the alley, but a cold hand gripped onto his harness and yanked him away.
"Don't listen to him," she whispered, walking closer to them. The kids scurried towards her, wrapping their arms around her legs while giving him the stink eye. Dante stuck out his tongue.
"Did you get bread?" the little girl asked, nuzzling into her hip.
She stroked both children's hair with slumped shoulders. "I'm sorry. It was all rotten."
"Oh... okay."
For a few seconds, she simply stood there, stroking the kids' heads. Then she said, "I still could ask the falafel lady. She might have leftovers from lunch rush."
Dante shivered. He hated falafel.
"You want me to buy a pizza for you or something?" He nodded his head towards Freddi's. "Besides, there's something I wanna ask you about."
But she flinched, and furiously shook her head. "No. Not there." She grabbed the children's hands and led them away. At a loss, Dante followed them.
"If it's money you're worried about, I'll pay."
"No. They just don't like people like me."
The words sent a strange shiver down his spine.

A/N: god I haven't written shit in ages. And it's not even good shit XD
Dimming Light - Chapter 1: Rage of the Dying
(A/N: becuz I feel like my writing skills have somewhat approved over the last several months as I kept practicing... I think it's time. It's time to face my worst batch of writing head on)
If any of you have read the original story titled "lost and found"... I'm sorry 😅 it was poorly written and just straight up garbage. Hopefully I can do the rewrite justice
...what am I saying I'll definitely fuck this up too
It should've been easy.
But as Dante laid there, blood pooling out of the strange gash in his stomach that refused to heal, he couldn't help but wonder if he had finally bitten off more than he could chew.
"Piece of shit demon," Lady grunted painfully, a hand pressed against her bleeding thigh as she glared at the six-winged demon that tore her clothes.
The demon itself simply stared back at them, golden eyes devoid of emotion.
"Not gonna lie, that face of yours is pissing me off," he grunted, forcing himself onto his feet. The ground looked way closer than he thought. "How 'bout I reel it in a little?"
He gripped his sword...
...And fell flat on his face.
