getting back into tumblr is one of the simultaneously best and worst things about 2020 for me
There are three days left of this year and today Hungary had an earthquake. A minor one, yes, but the last time this happened was NEARLY FOURTY YEARS AGO. 2020 couldn't just go out without a bang, now could it.
there’s nothing more funny than seeing old ‘happy 2020 new year’ posts and just going
well this aged well...

Johannes van Wijckersloot
Allegory on the French Invasion of 1672
1673
Analysis
In this scene a young Orangist, a supporter of William III of the House of Orange as denoted by the orange feather, looks at the viewer while holding a drawn image before the eyes of a Regent, a rank of civic governance in the Dutch Republic associated with cities and citizen organisations. The Regent appears wearing a crumpled nightcap; he has been sleeping and therefore blind to the French threat to the Republic, a threat the Orangist has known and could have averted. On the drawing the Lion of the Dutch Republic appears moribund on the ground aside a broken sword, symbolic of military defeat. The lion’s enclosure, the visual motif of the 'Hollandic Yard’ was typical in the Netherlands as symbolic of the protected and safe lands of the Dutch Republic, has been broken into; the invader has beaten down the door and brought the once fierce animal to its knees. Above this bleak image, the French rooster crows in triumph atop the escutcheon of France, flanked by four more arrows. The seven arrows represent the seven provinces of the Netherlands. A few bars of music are penciled below.
Painted as a allegory for the Rampjaar, or Disaster Year, the dire straits of the young Republic are shown before the view, a wound that only the leadership of the King can heal. Visible beneath the fashionable blue ‘slit sleeve’ doublet of the Regent is a hint of orange silk. Perhaps the Regent is convinced by the Orangist and his true colours are shining through.
Barend Wijnveld (1820–1902) - Anno 1672. The heroic defense of Aardenburg - 1897
Margaretha Sandra (1629 in Middelburg – 1674 in Aardenburg, Zeeland), was a Dutch heroine, known for participation in the defence of Aardenburg during the siege of the French in 1672. The small fortress town had few soldiers so the women dressed themselves as soldiers and manned the city walls to appear to be soldiers to the enemy. They managed to hold the city until reinforcements arrived without losses. Margaretha Sandra made ammunition during the battle and has been pointed out as a representative for all the women taking part in the defence.
In Dutch history, the year 1672 was known as the rampjaar, the "disaster year." That year, following the outbreak of the Franco-Dutch War and the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch Republic was simultaneously attacked by England, France, and the prince-bishops Bernhard von Galen, bishop of Münster, and Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, archbishop of Cologne. The invading armies quickly defeated most of the Dutch States Army and conquered part of the Republic. A famous Dutch saying coined that year describes the Dutch people redeloos, its government radeloos, and the country reddeloos: irrational, desperate, and beyond rescue, respectively. Fed up with reduced military spending, the cities of the remaining coastal provinces of Holland, Zealand and Frisia underwent a political transition: the city governments were taken over by Orangists, opposed to the republican regime of the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt, soon ending the First Stadtholderless Period. Despite the initial shock and successful invasion of the eastern Dutch Republic, the English, French and German forces were eventually driven back. The English were defeated by the navy under Michiel de Ruyter in 1674, resulting in the Treaty of Westminster and eventually leading to the Glorious Revolution. Without English pressure and with the French being held in the south, Cologne and Münster also made peace in 1674. The French were eventually repelled with the help of the Spanish forces in the Spanish Netherlands, though some Spanish cities were ceded to France. The conflict eventually ended with the Treaties of Nijmegen in 1678-9.
Barend Wijnveld (13 August 1820 – 18 February 1902), was a Dutch painter.
HOPE, A DANGEROUS WORD
HOPE, A DANGEROUS WORD This is a poem I wrote back in the hellhole that was last year. I tried my best capture the spirit, or lack thereof, that was much prevalent last year. Hope you find it connecting to you in ways that are bittersweet yet comforting.
Do you remember, the way you hazed in the glory of celebrations,or fell asleep reading that book, yet we all landed on the other side, the same. Started with bleeding fires, face of a species wiped from Earth, should’ve cried for help, but could they?rushed by their side, gave prayers or two, water, food and love to save. Then was hellbent a madman, declaring wars on petty battles he lost, couldn’t…
