I feel like it would’ve been fitting to have started the series with Nazia Hassan, but in true random magpie blogging fashion, I didn’t plan anything. The reason I say this is Pakistani singer-songwriter Nazia Hassan (with her brother Zoheb) is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the Indipop genre and her music and voice remain absolutely iconic. Shweta Shetty, Alisha Chinai, Sagarika, Anamika, Suchitra Krishnamurthy, Viva! and countless others built upon styles, rhythms, tones that Nazia Hassan successfully brought to South Asian pop consciousness in the 80s. It’s even more impressive when you consider that she died in her 30s, some years after retiring from a ~20 year musical career.

The gifs are from 4 videos of songs that I’ve grown up with and love very much. A teenage Nazia Hassan recorded Aap Jaisa Koi and it was featured in the Bollywood film Qurbani (1980), launching Nazia and her voice to widespread acclaim in the subcontinent and beyond. It also was the first of several collaborations with Biddu, who later remixed and re-produced some of their most popular songs, including Boom Boom and Disco Deewane. Boom Boom first appeared in the Bollywood movie Star (1982) but I discovered it via the 1995 remix video with a very young Anupama Verma and Bikram Saluja caught in a fairytale involving reincarnation, royalty and some casually Orientalist imagery. Definitely, one of my favourite things about Indipop videos are the sightings of people from the Golden Age of Indian supermodels and later soap opera stars. Disco Deewane, similarly, was originally released in 1981 but I discovered it via the Extremely Disco Sagarika cover from 1996. Not to be the toxic-nostalgia-drenched, broken-record YouTube comments section of a 90s video, but the SOTY version of Disco Deewane fails to be a patch on not just Nazia’s original but also Sagarika’s cover. (I unironically love the pop and disco precursors of the electropop aesthetic that many of these 90s videos have.) The last two gifs are from an early 80s video of Nazia herself performing Disco Deewane. It’s telling of what a powerhouse she was that this no-frills video with Nazia and Zoheb singing and dancing in button-down shirts and denims is as fun to watch as the wacky, over-produced visuals of the 90s remixes and covers. Just, what a legend.

there's something about nazia hassan's music that makes me want to cry. i don't know what it is; maybe it's her voice. maybe it's the fact that my mother introduced me to her when i was eleven, and she gets so happy whenever i play her songs. nazia is the artist i listen to whenever im sad, but i also listen to her when im happy. her music heals me. she means so much to me. i love her.
