Ooktober Day 11 - The Black Ribboners!
It is not quite 11am I am on break and I am once again Thinking About Vampires, bc ofc I am
Please rec me ur fave vampire stories (books preferred but any medium is ok!!)
I realize that the bulk of vampire fiction out there is ~sexy~ and like I Get It, I am a known to be a Have The Hots For Vampires On Main person, but also the literary potential of vampires in ficiton?? The angst? The tragedy of the dhamphir? When the sire is evil? Fighting the self as monstrous? The unending hunger for something More Than Human? The Everything of it all??? When all of that is accompanied by well-written redemption, atonement, romance, or friendship arcs???
Idc how obvious you think the rec is PLEASE send it to me I have been hungering (ha) for more vampire stuff lately that isn't just terrible romance
"Margolotta, Lady. Lady Margolotta Amaya Katerina Assumpta Crassina con Uberwald. A rich vampire from UBERWALD, who occupies four pages in the Almanac de Gothick. She lives in a castle that looks as though it could be taken by a small squad of not-very-intelligent soldiers. The builder was clearly influenced by fairy tales and, possibly, by some of the more ornamental sorts of cake. It is a castle for looking at. In the chintzy sitting room, with patterns on the furniture which have a bit of a bat look about them, we find Lady Margolotta.
She looks like someone's mother - someone with an expensive education that is, and she moves like someone who's grown used to her body. She wears pearls, a pink jumper and sensible flat shoes. Admittedly, there are bats embroidered on the jumper. At her feet, lying on a cushion, is a little dog with a bow at its neck. It looks more like a rat.
Lady Margolotta does not drink human blood. She has been 'teetotal' for almost four years when we meet her and she is a member of the Uberwald League of Temperance - the Black Ribboners. [TFE]"
— The NEW Discworld Companion, Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs (2004)
Ah, there he is. My favorite Discworld vampire. As much as I love Maladict and their coffee addiction and flashsides, I'll always have a soft spot for Otto.
Mal having flashsides is something else, on the one hand using 'yo' and 'I hear you' to Jackrum, on the other slightly more severe hand, having flashsides to the Vietnam War.
My baby boi Otto Chriek
Characters I think should have a swishy coat:
Thomas Thorne - just think of what he could achieve
Lieutenant Leslie - vibe increases by 1000
Crowley - maybe not in modern clothing but definitely at some point
Literally any vampire from Discworld - they may already have one but just make it 10 times bigger and you’re good
Colonel Mackenzie - he may not deserve it but imagine how much more dramatic his entrances/exits would be
discworld vampires are very interesting to me, especially the black ribboners. they give up blood, and then they have to choose a new elixir of life, which can be a physical substance(like maladicta with coffee) or a practice(like otto with photography). … on typing this out, I’m not entirely sure I know what point I’m trying to make, but I was just reading the truth and every time Otto came along I was looking at this guy with his obsession with light and color and placement and thinking “oh this guy autistic as hell.”
