Opinion | How dumb can a nation get and still survive?

We seem determined to find out.

Donald Trump didn’t make America “great”. And the only way America First was a reality was with the world’s greatest COVID-19 casualties.

But Trump did make America dumber than ever. That’s saying a lot considering that most people who remember the 2000s could not imagine stupidity getting any worse than under the halfwit George W. Bush.

How did we become, in such alarming measure, so dumb? Why is the news dominated by ridiculous controversies that should not be controversial at all? When did so many of our fellow citizens become full-blown nihilists who deny even the concept of objective reality? And how must this look to the rest of the world?

The GOP has become the party of White racial grievance, and this battle against an imaginary enemy stirs the base. But the whole charade involves Republican officials — many of them educated at the nation’s top schools — betting that their constituents are too dumb to know they’re being lied to. So far, the bet is paying off.

I won’t claim that every Democrat holds an advanced degree. But Republicans have a political stake in keeping people as dumb as possible. They have made their followers dumb to the extent that they are killing themselves off by failing to take free and common sense measures to ward off a potentially fatal disease.

Worship of the Dear Leader entails profuse public displays of stupidity, ignorance, and dishonesty. If the intensity of the pro-Trump idiocy exceeds the intensity of the pro-reason and pro-logic American majority then the country will remain in great danger.
